Kouijzer's Goal in Double OT Sends Louisville to a 2-1 Win at No. 19 Ohio State
September 27, 2021 | Field Hockey
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Julie Kouijzer's goal with 4:45 left to play in double overtime lifted the fourth-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team to a 2-1 win at No. 19 Ohio State. With the victory, the Cardinals improve to 9-1 on the season while the Buckeyes drop to 6-3.
"Every time we play Ohio State, it is a tough contest and can go either way," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "We had some great periods of play but also we became too frantic and went away from our typical possession play. Hats off to their goalkeeper who came up big for them. Overtime I was very pleased with how we controlled the play and ultimately were rewarded with a victory. It was another gritty performance by our team on the road."
After the Cardinals overcame a 1-0 deficit with a fourth quarter goal by Katie Schneider, the contest remained tied until Kouijzer's game-winning goal broke the 1-1 stalemate in the second overtime. Aimee Plumb's initial penalty corner shot was stopped by Ohio State goalkeeper Aaliyah Hernandez, but Kouijzer connected on the rebound from the top of the circle and fired a shot into the cage for her fourth goal of the season and second-straight game-winning goal.
Overall, Louisville outshot Ohio State 14-7 with an 11-3 advantage in shots on goal and a 5-2 edge in penalty corners. Freshman Mila de Kuijer collected two saves to move to 9-1.
The teams played through a scoreless first half with Louisville owning a 4-3 edge in shots, two of which were stopped by Hernandez, who would go on to post nine saves in the game. The Cardinals also tallied three penalty corners with the Buckeyes earning one.
Ohio State took the lead midway through the third quarter when Hallie Brost broke away in the midfield and found her way to the circle where she delivered a shot past de Kuijer with 7:21 remaining on the clock.
The Cardinals had a scoring opportunity, drawing a penalty corner in the closing seconds of the third quarter, but Kouijzer's initial shot was blocked by the Buckeyes' defense.
Louisville continued to attack earning a corner with seven minutes left in the fourth quarter. Plumb got the play started and Charlie van Oirschot provided the stop for Julie Kouijzer whose initial shot was deflected by Katie Schneider. The redshirt junior's fourth goal of the season evened the score at 1-1.
The Cardinals had an advantage in numbers late in the fourth quarter when a green card was shown to Ohio State's Claudia Thomas with 2:04 on clock, but the score remained even.
The game entered a 10-minute, sudden-victory 7v7 overtime period in which each side had chances, but neither team was able to deliver a shot. The Cardinals converted on their only penalty corner of the extra time to get the win.
Louisville will return to action on Friday when No. 16 Wake Forest visits Trager Stadium for an ACC matchup at 4 p.m.
