September 24, 2021 | Men's Soccer
Louisville defeated Boston College 2-0 on Friday at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Two goals in the final 15 minutes lifted the 25th-ranked University of Louisville men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Boston College on Friday night at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium.
The win is the fourth straight for the Cardinals, their first four-match winning streak since capturing five straight from Sept. 9-24, 2016. It also moves Louisville to 3-0-0 in ACC play for the fourth time in eight seasons in the conference, matching the program's best start since joining the league.
Louisville (6-2-0, 3-0-0 ACC) dominated for much of the night, finishing the match with a 60-40 edge in possession. However, the Cardinals were unable to find the back of the net over the first 75 minutes. UofL had a 10-0 edge in shots and 8-0 corner kick advantage in the first half, but the match remained scoreless.
Boston College (3-4-1, 0-2-1) finally got its first shot off nearly 60 minutes into the match and it required a strong effort from Detre Bell to stop the open opportunity.
The Cardinals finally broke through in the 77th minute, taking advantage of a corner kick opportunity. Sander Roed sent a ball in from the right corner that found the head of Ugochukwu Achara who tucked it inside the left post. Achara has now scored in each of the last three matches.
Louisville's attack kept charging at the net and it found a second strike 10 minutes later. Aboubacar Camara had a scoring chance, but his shot was saved. However, Nico Diaz won the race to the rebound inside the six-yard box and tapped it home for his first goal of the season.
Bell and the Louisville defense saw out the rest of the match to register a second straight clean sheet. It was Louisville's first consecutive shutouts since September of 2019 and the fourth in the last six matches.
Louisville outshot Boston College 22-3 on the night and finished up with a 12-1 edge on corner kicks.
The Cardinals wrap up their three-match homestand on Tuesday with Western Illinois coming to Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET.
