Late Goals Lift Cardinals Past Evansville
August 30, 2021 | Men's Soccer
Sander Roed and Aboubacar Camara scored in the final four minutes for the 2-1 victory.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Staring at a one goal deficit in the final stages of the match, the University of Louisville men's soccer team tallied a pair of goals in the final four minutes to secure a 2-1 victory over Evansville on Monday night at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium.
Trailing 1-0 in the 87th minute, Pedro Fonseca sent a cross into the box that found the head of Sander Roed who tucked it away to square the match up at one.
Less than two minutes later, the Cards struck again. Aboubacar Camara took advantage of a turnover and touched a ball past the keeper before firing his shot past a pair of defenders for the game-winner.
The two goals came within one minute, 52 seconds on the clock to flip the match in Louisville's favor and give the Cardinals their first of the season.
Louisville (1-1-0) controlled much of the possession throughout the first half and held a 6-4 advantage in shots, but neither side was able to find the net as the two teams went to the half scoreless.
Evansville (0-2-0) finally broke through with a goal in the 63rd minute to take a 1-0 lead and appeared headed to a victory before the late strikes from the Cardinals.
Louisville finished the night with a 20-5 advantage in shots after a 14-1 margin over the second 45 minutes. Detre Bell saved a pair of shots to pick up the victory in goal for the Cards.
Louisville returns to the pitch on Friday for a home match against Bellarmine, the first match between the two programs since Bellarmine moved to Division I. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium.
