Director of Olympic Sports Medicine Carole Banda Retires After 21 Years at UofL
June 29, 2021 | Field Hockey, General
Carole Banda, the University of Louisville's Director of Olympic Sports Medicine has announced her retirement effective July 1 after 21 years at UofL and 36 years in college athletics. Â
Â
While working primarily with the field hockey program throughout her time at Louisville, Banda has also covered women's basketball, rowing and men's and women's golf. She was responsible for daily sports medicine operation at the Cardinal Park facility for 21 of UofL's sports while supervising 10 full-time athletic trainers.
Â
"I want to congratulate Carole on a tremendous career and a well-deserved retirement," said UofL head field hockey coach Justine Sowry. "She should be incredibly proud of the legacy she is leaving and the number of lives she touched along the way. Our program is both honored and fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with her for so many years. She was a constant within the field hockey program and could always be counted on to care for our players emotionally and physically. So many of our former student-athletes have reached out since hearing of her retirement and I think that speaks volumes to the impact she's had in our player's lives both on and off the field. She will be missed terribly, but Carole is a Cardinal Forever. I have no doubt she will continue to be seen at Trager Stadium and will remain the biggest supporter of our program."
Â
Banda joined UofL in 2000 as the Associate Director of Sports Medicine. She has coordinated sports medicine coverage for conference championships in men's basketball, tennis, field hockey and track and field along with six NCAA Field Hockey National Championships.
Before her time at Louisville, Banda was the associate athletic trainer from 1997 to 2000 at the University of Notre Dame, spending the six years prior as the assistant athletic trainer. As the associate, she supervised seven assistant athletic trainers, coordinated volunteer student athletic trainer program and traveled with football and women's lacrosse.
Prior to her stint with the Fighting Irish, she served as assistant athletic trainer at Morehead State from 1986-1991 where she had teaching responsibilities and coordinated pre-season physicals. She began her athletic training at Eastern Illinois as the assistant athletic trainer and administrative assistant after spending a year as a graduate assistant.
She is a member of the Indiana Athletic Trainers Association and is currently a member of the Kentucky Athletic Trainers' Society. She is also a National Athletic Trainer's Association (NATA) certified trainer with CPR certification.
The New Manchester, W.Va. native graduated from West Virginia University in 1984 with a Bachelor's of Science in secondary education. She earned a master's in health, physical education and recreation in 1985 from Eastern Illinois.
