Former All-American comes to the Ville from Florida State
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Nick Zorn, who spent the last three years as an assistant coach for the Florida State swimming and diving teams, will join the University of Louisville coaching staff.
"We are excited to welcome Nick Zorn to join our staff. We started this process by determining some key traits and experience that we expected to have in a new member of our coaching staff. We truly pursued a national and international search process to find the person who matched our vision," said Arthur Albiero, UofL head coach. "Nick checked all the boxes and he was the unanimous choice of our search committee. Nick will bring great passion for fast swimming and for developing young men and women into world class performers in and out of the pool. He is a student of our sport and he is eager to learn and contribute to our current staff. We will have a few announcements coming soon, related to that."Â
At FSU, he helped the Seminoles build the men's relays into some of the fastest in the nation as four of the five earned automatic bids to the NCAA Championships in 2019-20. All five relays also stood on the podium at ACCs for the first time since 2009. Zorn coached middle distance freestyle for men and women and helped coach the 800 free relay team that broke the men's record. The Seminole men finished 5th at the 2021 ACC Championships and Florida State placed 23rd at the NCAA Championships. At the 2021 women's championships, the No. 25-ranked Florida State finished 7th and qualified three swimmers. In addition to coaching mid free, he served as the international recruiter for men and women.
"I am extremely excited to have the opportunity to work with a staff as passionate as this," said Zorn. "Under Arthur's leadership, Louisville has consistently reached new heights as a program and I am eager to learn and contribute everything I can. I can't wait to get to The Ville and start working towards our goals."
Prior to his stint at FSU, he served two seasons as a volunteer assistant at Alabama, where he helped the Crimson Tide men achieve back-to-back NCAA top 15 finishes while being ranked in the CSCAA Top 25.
While in Tuscaloosa, Zorn spent the 2016-17 season working with the sprinters. He moved over to coach the breaststroke group in 2017-18, which was led by junior Justine MacFarlane who took 16th in the 100 breast at the 2018 NCAA Championships. She also helped Alabama to a 12th place finish in the 200 medley relay.
Outside of the pool, Zorn assisted the staff with international recruiting and also led dryland training for the student-athletes during the summer.
Zorn worked with the Bama sprint groups in 2016-17 where he worked with rising senior Robert Howard. Howard set a new Alabama LCM record in the 100m free at 48.67 at the 2018 Phillips 66 National Championships and he also added an eighth place finish in the 50m free at 22.17. Howard would eventually become an SEC Champion in the 50 and 100 freestyles as a senior and finish 3rd in the 50 free at NCAAs in 2019 as a senior.
The native of Arlington Heights, Illinois, got his start in coaching during his senior season at Delta State University by assisting the local club team, Delta Aquatic Club.
Zorn was an All-American at Delta State where he specialized in the free events. He helped lead the Statesmen to five NSISC relay titles during his career and was the individual champion in the 100 free as a senior in 2016.
