Leonhardt homers, doubles and gets the win for the Cardinals
CHAPEL Hill, N.C. -- University of Louisville relief pitcher Jennifer Leonhardt helped her own cause, hitting a double and a homer and snagging the win from the circle as the Cardinals beat North Carolina 12-7 Friday evening in Chapel Hill.

The Cardinals scored 12 runs on nine hits with four homers on the day to improve their record to 20-25-1 and 14-19-1 in the ACC. Carmyn Green powered the offense, going two-for-five with three runs, 2 RBI and a homer. Starting pitcher Taylor Roby, who stayed in the game as DP hit a three-run homer. Right fielder Charley Butler also hit a homer for the Cards, recording two RBI and a pair of runs.

Roby went three and two-thirds innings, giving up four runs on six hits and struck out two. Leonhardt went three and a third, giving up three runs on seven hits and striking out two to be credited with the win and move her record to 3-8.

The Tarheels scored seven runs on 13 hits but committed three errors. Starting pitcher Katie Grace Olinger went one-third of an inning, gave up four runs, all earned, on three hits to drop her record to 1-5. Gaby Katz pitched the rest of the way, giving up eight runs on six hits, walking four and striking out two. The Cardinals jumped on Olinger early, tagging her with five runs in the top of the first. Carmyn Greenwood and Maddy Newman both reached on singles before Taylor Roby launched a ball over the left field fence to clear the bases. Rebecca Chung got on board after being hit by Olinger. Reliever Gaby Katz came in and gave up a two-run homer by Charley Butler, the first batter she faced. Katz induced the final two Cardinal batters to ground out to escape the inning.

Carolina put a run on the board in their half of the second when Bri Stubbs smacked a double with two outs and then advanced to third on a passed ball and was able to score on the same play. Â Roby escaped any further damage, retiring Kayla Baptista on a ground out to third.

Louisville added a pair of runs in their half of the third when Celene Funke drew a walk with one out and advanced on a groundout by Servi. Â Carmyn Greenwood reached on a fielding error, pushing Funke to third. Greenwood stole second before Newman reached on an error to plate both Funke and Greenwood, with both runs being unearned. A Cardinal strikeout ended the inning.

The Tar Heels answered in the fourth with a two-out, three-run rally. Campbell Hutcherson banged a two-run single one off the left field wall before pinch hitter Zoe Goodman singled up the right side to score pinch runner Baptista. Roby was then replaced in the circle by reliever Jennifer Leonhardt who grazed Burkhardt to load the bases but then fanned Destiny Middleton to escape the inning.

Leonhardt helped her own cause in the top of the sixth when she smacked a two-run home to score Butler who had reached on a walk.

In the bottom of the inning, Kiannah Pierce led the Tar Heels off with a double to center and then scored when Taylor Greene ripped an RBI double as the next batter. Carolina stranded two baserunners as Leonhardt escaped further damage with two fly outs to end the threat.

After a scoreless top of the sixth, the Tar Heels' Destiny Middleton tripled with two outs and then scored on an RBI single by Pierce. Greene then singled to right and advanced on the throw before Brittany Pickett singled to load the bases. Stubbs singled to drive in Pierce before Baptista grounded to end the inning, leaving the bases loaded. In the top of the Cardinals seventh with one out, Leonhardt doubled to right and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Funke. Jenna Servi hit an RBI single before Camryn Greenwood crushed a two-run homer, her third of the year. The Cards grounded out to end the inning.
