Newman leads with 3-4 day at the plate, Servi notches first triple
BRIGHTON, Mass. -- The University of Louisville softball team used a three-run fourth inning to seal a 4-1 win and even the series at Boston College Sunday afternoon at the Harrington Athletic Village.
Â
Louisville (19-25, 13-19 in the ACC) scored four runs on 12 hits with no errors and stranded 10 baserunners. UofL was led by Maddy Newman's three hits in four at bats and one run. Jenna Servi had one hit in her two at bats, an RBI triple and her first extra base hit of the season. Carmyn Greenwood had two RBI of UofL's four RBI, but no hits. Starting pitcher Taylor Roby, who boosted her season record to 11-10, pitched five complete innings, giving up just three hits and walking three for the win. Reliever Jennifer Leonhardt came in at the top of the sixth to pitch two complete innings, giving up just one hit and fanning two.
Â
Boston College (13-29, 9-20) was held to four hits with the Eagles committing three errors. Centerfielder Ellie Mataya went one-for-three at the plate adding a walk. Pitcher Susannah Anderson, who went the distance, gave up 12 hits, four runs, walking one and striking out three. She was saddled with the loss to drop to 9-16 on the season.
Â
The Cardinals boarded their first run in the second inning when Rebecca Chung singled to right field with one out. Celene Funke singled down the left field line to advance pinch runner Elana Ornelas. Servi walked to load the bases before Carmyn Greenwood reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Ornelas. Newman flew out to left to end the inning.
Â
Louisville added three runs in the fourth when Funke singled up the middle and stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by catcher Gianna Goccagno. Servi tripled to score Funke before Carmyn Greenwood got her other RBI on another fielder's choice to drive in Servi. After Greenwood was caught stealing, Newman and Roby both singled, with Newman scoring on a double by Makayla Hurst. Cassady Greenwood flew out to center to end the inning.
Â
Boston College's only run came in the fifth when Gianna Randazza singled to left before pinch hitter Jenna Ergle pushed her to second on a single. Roby walked Kennedy Labshere to load the bases and Randazza then scored on a fielder's choice by DJhane Valido. The Eagles left the bases loaded as their only scoring inning came to an end when the Cards took out the lead runner on a fielder's choice.
