Cardinals Head to Tennessee Challenge

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – University of Louisville track and field will wrap up the regular season this weekend when the Cardinals travel to Knoxville, Tenn., for the Tennessee Challenge on May 1.

"We are excited to see a sunny forecast in Knoxville this weekend," said UofL head coach Dale Cowper. "Our students are prepared to take advantage of one final opportunity during the 2021 regular season.Â

Season Highlights
• Alexis Gibbons has two long jump wins this season – at the Tennessee Relays and the Louisville Invitational. She also posted a runner-up finish at the Auburn Tiger Classic and a third place showing at the Clark Wood Invitational.
• Current ACC Women's Field Performer of the Week Gabriela Leon has three pole vault wins in the outdoor season, most recently setting a school record with a clearance of 4.28m (14.05) at Louisville's Clark Wood Invitational on April 23. Prior to that, she tied the school record with a vault of 4.27m (14-0) to win in the Louisville Invitational and also won the event at the
Tennessee Relays.
• Purity Sanga has tallied three wins in the outdoor season, and is coming off of a first place showing in the 5000m with a time of 16:36.69 at Louisville's Clark Wood Invitational. She also won the 10,000m while Dorcas Wasike finished second and Ivine Chemutai placed third as the Cardinals swept the top three spots in the event at the Tennessee Relays. Sanga opened the 2021 outdoor by winning the 1500m at the Louisville Invitational.
• Current ACC Men's Field Performer of the Year Albert Kosgei has a pair of 3000m steeplechase wins, most recently at last weekend's Clark Wood Invitational when he set a new stadium record with a time of 8:49.47. He also won the 3000m steeplechase at the Tennessee Relays and finished third in the 1500m at the Louisville Invitational.
• Adar Sheere has collected three wins in the discus throw, most recently at last weekend's Clark Wood Invitational. The week prior, Sheere won Tennessee Relays with a season-best mark of 57.29m (187-11) which stands seventh on Louisville's all-time list. He also took the event at the Louisville Invitational.Â
• Sterling Warner-Savage clocked a personal-best time of 10.41 to take the 100m dash at the Tennessee Relays and also claimed the 200m at the Louisville Invitational.
• Jeremiah Willis has tallied two wins in the long jump, notching a personal-best mark of 7.69m (25-2.75) at the Tennessee Relays. He also won the event at the Louisville Invitational and placed second at the Auburn Tiger Track Classic. Willis placed third at the Clark Wood Invitational.

Louisville currently has six athletes among the top 30 in the nation in their respective events:
Women
• Gabriela Leon's pole vault of 4.278m (14-0.5) at the Clark Wood Invitational is tied for 10th in the nation while Aliyah Welter's vault of 4.17m (13-8.25) stands tied for 27th.
Men
• In the 3000 steeplechase, Albert Kosgei stands at No. 16 with a time of 8:49.47 attained on April 24 at the Clark Wood Invitational.
• Adar Sheere's discus throw mark of 57.29m (187-11) at the Tennessee Relays is currently No. 20 in the nation.
• Trey Allen's clearance of 2.17m (7-1.5) in the Louisville Invitational is tied for 23rd nationally
• Jeremiah Willis' long jump of 7.69m (25-2.75) in the Tennessee Relays stands tied for 30h nationally. Â
