Sanga, Leon Post Wins in Clark Wood Invitational

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Gabriela Leon led the way in the pole vault and Purity Sanga won the 5000m as the Cardinals registered a total of 11 top-three finishes on the opening day of the Clark Wood Invitational.

"Hopefully we can get this same type of weather tomorrow," said UofL head coach Dale Cowper. "Our students were able to make strong progress today as each squad continues on a path of progress. May and June are big months for our program and we need to pick up as many qualifiers as possible before we get into championship season.

On the women's side, the Cardinals also took the top three spots in the pole vault. Gabriela Leon captured the win with school-record vault of 4.28m (14-00.50). Aliyah Welter and Auriane Viola both recorded vaults of 4.13m(13-06.50) to place second and third, respectively.

The Cardinals took the top two spots and had four overall in the top 10 in the 5000m run. Junior Purity Sanga picked up the win with a time of 16:36.69 with senior Dorcas Wasike right behind her, finishing second with a time of 16:46.65. Senior Bailey Beery placed sixth with a time of 17:08.21 while junior Ivine Chemutai rounded out the group placing eighth with a time of 17:11.41.

Senior Renate Van Tonder added another top three finish in the day's competition for UofL as she placed third in the event with a jump of 1.76m(5-09.25). Freshman Jenna Hensley tied for seventh with a jump of 1.66m(5-05.25).

Sophomore Addie Warner and freshman Raeli Howerton finished third and fourth in the javelin throw after launches of 40.09m(131-06) and 39.79m(130-06), respectively.

In the long jump, Louisville again took two of the top five spots led by seniors Alexis Gibbons and Renate Van Tonder who finished third and fourth in the event. Gibbons took third with a jump of 6.25m(20-06.25) while Van Tonder took fourth with a jump of (6.22m(20-05.00).

In the hammer throw, junior Makenli Forrest finished fourth with a throw of 58.88m(193-02) while senior Halee Hudson brought home a sixth-place finish after a toss of 57.05m(187-02).

Freshman Kiyah Yeast led a trio of Louisville runners in the women's 200m dash, finishing fifth in the event with a time of 24.20.

Senior Rashida Harris finished in the top 10 in the women's shot put as she placed seventh with a throw of 15.25m(50-00.50).

For the men, in the high jump, all three Louisville athletes finished top five, led by freshman Trey Allen who came in third with a leap of 2.14m(7-00.25). Sophomore Luke Nichols and fellow freshman Jonah Hyde tied for fifth with jumps of 1.99m(6-06.25).

Louisville had three runners land in the top 10 in the men's 5000 race, led by freshman Ian Kibiwot who placed third with a time of 14:33.25. Juniors Cameron Stephens and Ben Ewert round out the group finishing sixth with a time of 14:44.64 and eighth with a time of 14:56.99.

In the men's long jump, Louisville took two of the top five spots led by freshman Jeremiah Willis who finished third after a jump of 7.44m(24-05.00). Fellow freshman Cayden Spencer-Thompson placed fifth with a leap of 7.38m(24-02.50).
Freshman Erik Fertig placed fourth in the hammer throw with a toss of 57.44m(188-05). Sophomore Adar Sheere added a top 10 finish for the Cardinals, placing 10th in the event after a throw of 53.89m(176-09).

Four men took finished among the top 10 in the shot put. Led by junior Cade Richeson who finished fifth with a throw of 17.97m(58-11.50) and senior Christian Buckley's sixth place mark of 17.59m(57-08.50). The group was rounded out by freshmen Jorge Contreras who was eighth after a toss of 17.51m(57-05.50) and Bryan Hudson who placed 10th with a mark of 17.25m(56-07.25).

Freshman Tkai Wade led the Cardinals duo finishing in 10th place with a time of 21.71 with sophomore Sterling Warner-Savage placing 14th with a time of 21.79.
