Louisville heads to Lake Harsha to race in talented field
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The University of Louisville rowing team is set to compete at the 2021 Big Ten Rowing Invitational at East Fork State Park in Bethel, Ohio.
Â
The action will take place April 17-18, 2021 at Harsha Lake, which features a 2,000-meter seven-lane buoyed course and a new start dock.
Â
"This race will consist of the Big Ten, five ACC teams, one Pac12 and two from the Big 12," said Derek Copeland, UofL head coach. "We have raced a few of these teams earlier this spring and we will race many of them again. It is a huge race for us to demonstrate growth. Our team has worked very hard to develop and now it is time to show it."
Â
The Big Ten Invitational will feature 16 collegiate women's rowing teams and more than 600 athletes. Eight schools from The Big Ten Conference will participate in the spring event including Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Ohio State, Rutgers and Wisconsin. Teams from outside of the Big Ten are expected to compete include Alabama, Brown, Duke, Louisville, Notre Dame, Syracuse, Tennessee, and Virginia.
Â
"It's so exciting to be able to go up against a ton of other racers," said senior Emily Corso. "Our early competition has been one or two other boats and this Invitational will have four or five boats each race. It is a really big privilege to be part of this event."
Â
Competition is expected to be strong as 11 teams come into the invitational ranked in the top 20, according to Preseason Pocock CRCA Poll presented by USRowing. Teams will arrive on April 16th to practice on Harsha Lake, with three rounds of racing over the course of the event. More than 70 races will be held throughout the weekend.
Â
"It's really exciting to be out there in the water," said Corso. "It's my senior year so I am very grateful to have a semi-normal season because last year's seniors did not. I am just excited to be here every day and throw down with these girls every day. This event will definitely build a memory for me when I graduate."
Â
No spectators will be allowed at the event due to safety procedures; however, this event will be live streamed so fans can watch the competition.
