No. 2 Louisville Earns a Shootout Win at No. 20 Miami (Ohio)
March 22, 2021 | Field Hockey
OXFORD, Ohio – The second-ranked University of Louisville field hockey prevailed over No. 20 Miami (Ohio) 2-1 in a shootout Monday afternoon at Miami's Field Hockey Complex. With the win, the Cardinals improve to 11-3 while the RedHawks drop to 7-1 on the 2021 spring season.
Â
"We feel fortunate to walk away with a win against a very talented and well coached team," said head coach Justine Sowry. "We had some great possession but were unable to generate quality opportunities. Defensively, we were tough, stingy and denied a very good offensive unit. We need to take a close look at the film on how we can be more effective with the ball."
The teams played through 22 scoreless minutes before the Cardinals broke through with a penalty corner goal midway through the second quarter. Sophomore Emilia Kaczmarczyk delivered her third goal of the season with assists from seniors Alli Bitting and Meghan Schneider.
Â
The Cardinals took the 1-0 lead into halftime after outshooting the RedHawks 7-0 and holding a 6-1 advantage in penalty corners.
Â
The RedHawks answered in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter with a penalty corner goal by Lexi Nugent to even the score at 1-1.
Â
With the game still knotted at 1-1 at the end of regulation, the teams entered the first of two 10-minute sudden-victory overtime periods with the field reduced to seven players per side. In the initial OT frame, Louisville fired off a pair of shots, both turned back by Miami goalkeeper Isabelle Perese. The RedHawks also had a scoring opportunity, but a save by Louisville's Sam Minrath sent the contest into a second overtime.
Â
Neither team delivered a shot on goal in the second overtime and Louisville entered its first shootout of the 2020-21 season.
Â
After Minrath stopped the RedHawks first attempt by Claudia Garcia, Meghan Schneider gave the Cardinals an edge when she converted on her try. A made Allie Grace Joyner evened the shootout tally with a made attempt and Mackenzie Karl pushed Louisville back on top 2-1. On the third try, Minrath thwarted Leonor Berlie's attempt and Katie Schneider gave the Cards a 3-1 advantage. Claire Hellman kept Miami's chances alive when her shot found the cage, but Charlie van Oirschot's final goal sealed the win for Louisville.
Â
In the game, the Cardinals outshot the RedHawks 12-5 and held an 8-2 edge in corners. Minrath (3-1) collected three saves while Perese had four stops for Miami.
Â
Louisville will return to action on March 27 when they travel to No. 15 Boston College for an ACC matchup.
