Van Tonder Wins Long Jump on Day One of Tiger Track Classic

AUBURN, Ala. –The University of Louisville's Renate van Tonder and Alexis Gibbons placed first and second in the women's long jump and Jeremiah Willis posted a runner-up finish in the men's long jump to lead the Cardinals on day one of the Auburn Tiger Track Classic Friday afternoon at Hutsell-Rosen Track.
The meet will continue Saturday starting at 12:30 p.m. (ET) with the men's high jump and women's triple jump.
In UofL's first outdoor meet of the 2021 season, van Tonder led the long jump field of 18 with a mark of 6.25m (20-6.25) on her final attempt. Teammate Alexis Gibbons finished runner-up with her leap of 6.20m (20-4.25). Riley Burger rounded out the Cardinal trio with a ninth-place finish (5.48m/17-11.75).
Junior Emma Bryant clocked a personal-best time of 4:31.47 for a fifth-place finish in the 1500m.
Sophomore Katherine Coffey recorded a personal-best mark of 51.59m (169-3) in the hammer throw to finish 14th while freshmen Tiana Bazie and Hannah Judge made their outdoor debuts with marks of 46.20m (151-7) and 45.18 (148-2) respectively.
Competing in her first collegiate outdoor meet, freshman Raeli Howerton posted a throw of 33.91m (111-3) in the javelin.
Freshman Callie Friske registered a time of 19:01.10 in her first outdoor 5000m.
On the men's side, Jeremiah Willis' outdoor debut leap of 7.18m (2306.75) was good for a second-place finish in the long jump.
