March 16, 2021 | Men's Golf
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Senior John Murphy of the University of Louisville men's golf team fired a final round 69 to finish in second place as the Cardinals placed third at V1 Sports General Hackler Championship on Monday at the Dunes Golf and Beach Club.
Entering the final round in fourth place, the Cardinals carded one of the top rounds of the day at 2-over-par to finish the tournament at 1-under-par. Louisville closed the event by shooting 275-298-290=863.
NC State won the event at 12-under-par, while North Florida finished three shots ahead of UofL at 4-under-par. It was the best finish this spring for the Cards and the top ending since placing third at the Mobile Sports Authority on Feb. 11, 2020.
Murphy entered the clubhouse tied for the overall lead at 9-under-par, but North Florida's Nick Gabrelcik birdied the last two holes to earn medalist honors.
Despite losing out on the title, Murphy was brilliant during the three-day event to register his best finish since winning the Bearcat Invitational last season. He stayed in contention on Tuesday by birding three of the last nine holes but suffered a critical bogey on No. 17.
The Kinsale, Ireland, native recorded his sixth top-five finish of his career and the second in the top 10 this spring. Murphy shot 66-72-69=207, his best total since firing a 206 at the Old Town Club Intercollegiate last season.
Jiri Zuska posted his eighth career top-10 finish and fourth in the top 20 this spring by placing in a tie for eighth place after shooting a 1-under par for the tournament. He shot under par in two of the three rounds to post his best finish this spring. The junior shot a 68-77-70=215 to tie his total from last week's Trinity Forest Invitational.
Trevor Johnson gave the Cardinals their third top-20 finish by placing in a tie for 19th place by shooting a 3-over-par 71-73-75=219.
After shooting 2-under-par to start the tournament, Matthias Schmid finished in a tie for 44th after firing an 8-over-par 70-76-78=224, while Devin Morley was 10-over-par to place in a tie for 55th. He ended the tournament by shooting 72-78-78=226.
The Cardinals return to action on March 28-29 at the John Hayt Invitational in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., on March 28-29.
