LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Senior John Murphy tied his season best with a first round 66 to lead the University of Louisville men's golf team into the lead at the General Hackler Invitational in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
With all five players shooting under or even-par, the Cardinals hold a two-stroke lead over eighth-ranked North Carolina. The Cardinals shot a season best 13-under-par, while the Tar Heels are next in line at 11-under par.
Murphy, who entered the tournament with a 73.08 stroke average, is in a three-way tie for the lead after shooting a 6-under par. Josh Gilkison of Kent State and Nick Infanti of North Florida are tied for the overall lead.
A native of Kinsale, Ireland, Murphy registered seven birdies on the day and just one bogey to match the 66 he shot at the Camp Creek Invitational to open the season.
Junior Jiri Zuska continued his run of fine play by shooting a four-under-par 68 to sit in a tie for eighth after his Sunday round. The third-year year player opened with four birdies on the first nine holes to get off to another fast start.
After a slow start, Matthias Schmid rebounded to shoot a 2-under-par 70 on the day.
Heading into the back nine at 1-over-par, Schmid recorded four birdies on the back to enter the second round in a tie for 16th place overall.
Trevor Johnson was also under par after shooting a 71 to stand in a tie for 23rd place, while Devin Morley is tied for 34th after his round of 72.
The Cardinals will begin second round play on Monday morning at 10:15 a.m.
