Rowing Set to Host 9th Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational
March 11, 2021 | Rowing
The Cards will face a stacked field of ranked programs
OAK RIDGE, Tenn. -- University of Louisville Rowing opens the 2021 season this weekend as the Cardinals host the ninth annual Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational at the Melton Lake Rowing Venue in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
Â
"It was the Thursday before this race last year that we had to pack up and return home," said Derek Copeland, UofL Head Coach. "In some ways we are picking up where we left off. In other ways, so much has changed. We are very appreciative of Oak Ridge Rowing Association and all of the teams competing for all of their hard work to make this happen. Being basically the first large spring regatta anywhere in the country after 490-plus days, Meg Lambert has stepped up in a big way to help make this happen. Most of all I am excited  for the athletes and the coaches to have this experience and see how far they have come since the world stood still."
Â
The Cardinals will be joined this weekend by 11 other programs, including fellow Atlantic Coast Conference members Clemson, Notre Dame and Virginia. Additional participants include Minnesota, Tulsa, Alabama, Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, Tennessee and SMU.
Â
Six of the competing squads are ranked in the CRCA preseason Top 20: No 3 Michigan, No. 7 Virginia, No. 11 Indiana, No. 12 Wisconsin, No. 16 Alabama, and No. 20 SMU, while four of the programs: Louisville, Minnesota, Tennessee and Notre Dame received votes in the first poll.
Â
The regatta will open on Saturday with a morning session from 9 a.m.-noon ET, followed by an afternoon session from 3-6 p.m. ET. Competition will conclude with a Sunday morning session from 9 a.m.-noon ET. Live results from all three sessions will be available on the Louisville team Twitter account (@UofLRowing) and HereNow.com, with daily recaps following on GoCards.com.
Louisville begins its action on Saturday at 9:48 with V8+ taking on Virginia and Wisconsin. The V4+ will race at 9:56 against the same opponents followed by the 2V8+ racing at 10:12 and the V4b+ going out at 10:20.Â
Â
On Saturday afternoon, the Cards face off with Indiana and Minnesota with V8+ racing at 3 p.m., V4+ at 3:08, 2V8+ at 3:24 and V4b+ at 3:32. (These race times are subject to change.)
Â
On Sunday morning, UofL will take on SMU and Michigan with V8+ racing at 10:44, V4+ going off at 10:52 ahead of the start time of 11:00 for the 2V8+. In the final race, UofL V4b+ will face SMU and Tennessee.
Â
The Cards return to official competition for the first time since closing their fall season in November of 2019 Â when they wrapped up their fall competition at the Rivanna Romp hosted by Virginia. The 4,000m race took place at the Rivanna Reservoir, where the Cardinals competed again six other schools. In the V8+ race, the Cardinals top boat finished in seventh place of 21 boats with a time of 13:56.5. The Cards finished ahead of Miami and Clemson's top boats and just a tenth of a second behind SMU. UofL's 2V8+ boat came across the line in a time of 14:22.3 to finish 13th. The 3V8+ boat finished in 18th place, as they came home in a time of 15:04.6.
Â

The 2V4+ crew crossed the finish line with a time of 16:03.1 to finish 18th. Just behind with a time of 16:05.0 was the 3V4+ boat. The 5V4+ boat finished 22nd in a time of 16:25.7, while the 4V4+ crew was 25th in a time of 16:52.9.
Following Oak Ridge, the Cards face a challenging slate that will next send them on a day trip up to Eagle Creek in Indianapolis to race Notre Dame on March 27. The Cardinals are looking forward to racing in the Big Ten Invitational April 17-18. Louisville's yearly trip to Michigan will occur the first weekend in May, two weeks before the ACC Championships in Clemson.
