Associate Head Coach Lucas Piccioli Departs Field Hockey Program after Nine Seasons
February 24, 2021 | Field Hockey
LOUISVILLE, Ky. –University of Louisville field hockey associate head coach Lucas Piccioli has resigned his position to pursue a career outside of coaching.
Â
"I have appreciated my time at the University of Louisville and I am proud of the many accomplishments we've achieved over the past nine years," said Piccioli. "I am grateful to have been a part of building Louisville into a nationally prominent program and within the ACC."
Â
Piccioli, who joined Justine Sowry's coaching staff as an assistant in 2012, helped direct the Cardinals to 121 wins, five NCAA appearances and several top 10 rankings, reaching as high as No. 5 in the nation - all while UofL made a successful transition into the powerful Atlantic Coast Conference. Individually, the Cardinals have earned 11 NFHCA All-America honors, garnered 32 All-Region and 17 All-Conference selections.
"I want to thank Lucas for an incredible nine-year partnership," said head coach Justine Sowry. "We had an amazing run. His support of me, the team, and the program during that time was immeasurable. During our stint, we successfully transitioned the program into the best field hockey conference in the country, developed a team that competes with the nation's best, and built a foundation for sustained success. Lucas was instrumental in our recruiting efforts and maximizing and turning technology into on-field performance. I wish Lucas the very best as he embarks on his new adventure and writes his next chapter."
Most recently, Piccioli helped lead the 2020 squad to an 8-2 record and the ACC regular season title and a runner-up showing in the ACC tournament in the fall. In the historic season, the Cardinals registered a 5-1 mark against ACC opponents, including a win against North Carolina, snapping the Tar Heels NCAA-best 47-game win streak.
Piccioli helped guide the Cardinals as they achieved numerous milestones in the 2019 campaign. The squad produced a 16-6 overall record, tying a program mark for wins and earned the overall No. 4 seed in the NCAA tournament, serving as a host site for the first time in program history. Louisville also made its first foray into the NCAA quarterfinals after defeating Michigan 2-1 in double-overtime in its first-round matchup.
