
Louisville Men and Women Win Lenny Lyles Cardinal Invitational

LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The University of Louisville's men's and women's tracks teams turned in solid performances while picking up wins at the Lenny Lyles Cardinal Invitational Wednesday afternoon at the newly-opened Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center. The women won with a score of 182 and the men tallied 159 points for the win. The meet also featured Bellarmine, Notre Dame and Eastern Kentucky.
"I think as we came out, we had a lot of highlights on the day," said UofL head coach Dale Cowper. "When you look through the results, we were excited to see a whole lot of students come out, and not only compete at a high level but come out and compete with passion. That's what ultimately our program continues to grow, is the passion. We talk about finishing a lot and today we saw a lot of kids come out and finish at a very high level."
In the first meet at the facility and their inaugural home meet, the Cardinals posted 15 total wins on the day. The men collected eight individual wins while the women posted seven.
For the men, Louisville's score of 159 placed ahead of Notre Dame (96), Eastern Kentucky (96) and Bellarmine.
The Cardinals took four out five of the top spots in the 60m dash, capped off by junior Sterling Warner-Savage's time of 6.72 for first place. Sophomore Isiah Pantiere placed second with a time of 6.94 with freshman Tkai Wade coming fourth with a personal best time of 7.02 and junior Aaron Johnson rounding out the team in fifth place with a personal best time of 7.04.
Freshman Justin Lehmkuhler took first place in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.42. Junior Micah Oberhausen finished right behind him in second with a time of 8.53.
Freshman Tkai Wade led the way with a second-place finish and time of 22.15 in the 200m. Juniors Kameron Jones and David Spalding placed fourth and fifth with times of 22.73 and 22.77, respectively. All three runners finished with personal best times.
In the 800m, senior Albert Kosgei led the Cardinals finishing third with a time of 1:56.50 in his first career attempt in the race, marking a personal best time. Sophomore Robert Kapolnek also had a personal best time in the event, finishing ninth with a time 2:04.49.
Senior Albert Kosgei placed fourth in the one mile run with a time of 4:12.70.
The men took a third win in the men's 3000 meter run with freshman Shadrack Kipkosgei taking first place with a time of 8:13.90.
In the 4x400, Louisville's two teams took two of the top three spots with the 'A' team, consisting of juniors Aaron Johnson and Micah Oberhausen, and freshmen Justin Lehmkuhler and Zach Frye, winning the event with a time of 3:18.12, and the 'B' team, consisting of junior Kameron Jones, sophomores Isiah Pantiere and Robert Kapolnek, and freshman Tkai Wade, taking third place with a time of 3:24.75.
The Cardinals took another win on the day in the men's high jump and three of top five spots. Sophomore Trey Allen led the group with a personal best tying jump of 2.11m/6-11.00 for first place. Sophomore Cayden Spencer-Thompson placed second with a jump of 2.06m/6-09.00 and junior finished fourth with a jump of 1.86m/6-01.25.
Sophomore Trey Allen took another first-place finish in the long jump with a new personal best jump of 6.84m/22-05.25.
The Cardinals took two of the top three spots in the pole vault, led by freshman Zach Frye who placed second with a vault of 4.73m/15-06.25. Senior Sean Roth placed third with a vault of 4.73m/15-06.25.
Louisville claimed another win and three of the top five spots in the men's shot put behind junior Cade Richeson who placed first with a throw of 17.30m/56-09.25. Freshman Jorge Contreras placed second with a throw of 16.85m/55-03.50 and junior Adar Sheere placed fifth with a throw of 16.64m/54-07.25.
Sophomore Cayden Spencer-Thompson placed first in the triple jump with a jump of 14.87m/48-09.50.
Junior Adar Sheere led the way in the weight throw taking second place with a throw of 19.34m/63-05.50. Freshman Ethan Alyea took fourth place with a throw of 17.80m/58-04.75.
On the women's side, the Cardinals' 182 points placed ahead of Notre Dame (101), Bellarmine (58) and Eastern Kentucky (58).
In the 50m dash, Louisville took three of the top five spots with freshman Jaelynn Williams posting a season best of 7.68 to finish in second in the 60m dash.
Freshman Brooke Weimer won the women's 60m hurdles with a time of 8.85, while junior Addie Wanner finished second with 9.14. Both tied their season bests.
Senior Dorcas Wasike won the 3000m run with a season-best time of 9:37.27 and Bailey Beery's career-best time of 9:46.99 was good for third place.
Freshman McKenzie Bell's season best 54.97 took first place in the 400m dash.
The Cardinals saw two more season bests in the 1 mile run as junior Emma Bryant ran for a time of 4:50:07 to finish second and senior Purity Sanga finished third with a time of 4:53.09.
Freshman Kambi Walker led a trio of Cardinals that all posted their season bests in the high jump, taking second place with a jump of 1.65m/5-05.00. Freshman Jenna Hensley cleared 1.65m/5-05.00 to place third, and senior Gabryella Pinnow cleared 1.65m/5-05.00 to place third.
Freshman Riley Burger placed first in the long jump with a leap of 5.60m/18-04.50 which is her season best.
The Cardinals took the top two spots in the triple jump with freshman Riley Burger winning her second event of the day with a jump of 11.72m/38-05.50. Junior Brianna Washington finished second with a jump of 11.58m/38-00.00. They both posted their season bests
Senior Gabriela Leon won the pole vault with a clearance of 4.23m/13-10.50 while posting a season best.
The Cardinals had two top five finishers with season bests in the shot put. Senior Victoria Farley threw a distance of 14.27m/46-10.00 and finished second. Freshman Claire Bushur threw for 12.96m/42-06.25 and placed fourth.
"Our student-athletes couldn't be more excited. This is one of the premier facilities, not only in the country but in the world. You're not going to find a better facility out there," said Cowper. "My hat goes off to Sadiqa Reynolds and the Urban league for putting this together as they've done everything. It's first-class and it's put together first-class. Eric Granger and his staff have done a tremendous job of managing it and we worked through a few hiccups today, but everything was great. It's a world-class facility that's really going to do a lot to generate the volume of people coming to this area of Louisville. We look forward to being a part of that."
Louisville will now prepare for the ACC Indoor Championships which will take place February 25-27 at Clemson.
