
Cardinals Prepare for Music City Challenge

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's and women's track and field distance teams will travel to Nashville for Vanderbilt's Music Challenge on Friday evening.

"We are excited to see our 5K group capitalize on the competitive fields entered at The Music City Challenge," said UofL head coach Dale Cowper. "NCAA distance events are expected to take a big step forward this weekend with a number of distance carnivals being staged across the country. Friday's races in Nashville will produce NCAA qualifying times and we hope to be a part of that group."
For the women, Bailey Beery, Ivine Chemutai, Purity Sanga and Dorcas Wasike will be competing in the 5000m run which is slated to start at 9:00 p.m.
Wasike (Kitale, Kenya) is competing in her second event of the 2021 indoor season. After nearly a year off from competition, the senior posted a time of 9:53 in the 3000m at the Notre Dame Invitational on January 27. Last season, she posted a runner-up finish in the 5000 at the ACC Indoor Championships.
Beery, a redshirt senior from Decatur, Ind., registered her personal-best 5000m time of 1635.38 a year ago at the Music City Invitational.
Chemutai,, a redshirt senior from Eldoret, Kenya, has posted a pair of top-10 finished in the 3000m this season and posted her career-best mark in the 5000m a year ago with a time of 16:40.70 at the Music City Challenge.
Sanga, a redshirt junior from Eldoret, Kenya, won the 3000m at the McCravy Green Invitational on January 16 at the McCravy Green Invitation and followed with her personal-best time of 9:35.79 in the event at the Notre Dame Invitational.
Shadrack Kipkosgei and Cameron Stephens will represent the Cardinal men in the 5000m run which will start at 9:40 p.m. (ET).
Kipkosgei, a redshirt freshman from Eldoret, Kenya, has competed in two meets in the 2021 Indoor season, recently achieving his best time of 8:22.63 in 3000m for a sixth-place finish at the Notre Dame Invitational. Prior to that, he posted a mark of 8:24.11 to finish seventh in the McCravy Green Invitational.
Stephens, a senior from Sellersburg, Ind., has a pair of top 10 finished in the 3000m this season, including his career-best mark of 8:25.89 in the 3000m of the Notre Dame Invitational
The Cardinals will return to action on February 17 when they host the Lenny Lyles Invitational at the Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center in Louisville.
