February 12, 2021 | Track & Field
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Louisville's men's and women's track teams turned in some solid performances at the Music City Challenge Friday evening at Vanderbilt's
Junior Purity Sanga ran a personal-best time of 16:11 to finish third in the 5000m while freshman Shadrack Kipkosgei clocked a time of 14:04.56 for a fifth place finish in his 5000m debut.
For the women, Sanga eclipsed her previous career record by 35 second and now stands fourth on Louisville's program list. Senior Dorcas Wasike, in only her second meet this season, finished ninth with a time of 16:30.23, which stands seventh on Louisville's all-time list.
Kipkosgei's mark was good for a fifth-place finish and currently ranks among the top 10 in the national standings.
"Purity Sanga ran a personal best 16:11 in her second ever indoor collegiate 5K with a strong third place finish in a quality field," said Walker. "Dorcas Wasike continued her comeback from injury with a hard-fought effort. On the men's side, Shadrack Kipkosgei had a tremendous debut and personal best of 14:04 in the first indoor 5K of his career."
"We were fortunate to have the opportunity to take our distance crew to Nashville for a shot at some fast indoor 5000m times this evening," said UofL assistant coach Joe Walker III. "I'm very proud of the group as they've been working hard the past few weeks."
The Cardinals will return to action on February 17 when they host the Lenny Lyles Invitational at the Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center in Louisville.
