LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's soccer team played No. 23 Notre Dame to a scoreless draw before losing the penalty shootout in the quarterfinal round of the 2021 ACC Championship on Sunday at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium.
Louisville (10-6-1) will now wait for the NCAA Selection Show on Monday, Nov. 15 to find out its postseason fate.
Despite no goals through 110 minutes, Sunday's quarterfinal featured back-and-forth action. Louisville took the opening shot of the match in the 11th minute and held a 5-4 shot advantage through the first 45 minutes.
Notre Dame (10-5-3) spent more time with possession in the second half, registering six shots to just three for the Cardinals, but neither side was able to break through.
The first overtime period went by without a shot, but the Fighting Irish fired off three attempts in the second overtime, including a pair in the final minute that required saves from Detre Bell.
With the match still scoreless, the two teams went to penalty kicks to determine which would advance to Wednesday's semifinal match at top-seeded Pitt.
Notre Dame buried each of its first three attempts, while the Cardinals were kept out of the net on three straight attempts.
Pedro Fonseca had his shot saved, with Sander Roed's attempt scooting wide of the right post before Bell's attempt was also saved to advance Notre Dame to the next round.
The Irish outshot Louisville 13-8 on the night, with both teams attempting five corner kicks. The physical contest featured 28 combined fouls between the two teams.
