LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's soccer team begins play in the 2021 ACC Championship on Sunday evening in the quarterfinal round against Notre Dame. Kickoff at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET and will be televised on the ACC Network.
ABOUT THE CARDINALS
The Cardinals are making their seventh appearance in the ACC Championship with a 7-4-1 all-time record. Louisville reached the final in its first season in the league in 2014 before claiming its first ACC Championship in 2018.
SERIES HISTORY
Louisville and Notre Dame meet for the 22nd time on Sunday with the Irish leading the all-time series 13-8-1. The home team has won each of the last 14 matches between the two programs played at a home site, with the last road victory coming by Notre Dame in 2006.
Sunday's match will be the second between Louisville and Notre Dame in the ACC Championship. The two teams met in the 2018 quarterfinal round with the Cardinals tallying a 1-0 victory on their way to winning the conference title. Tate Schmitt headed home a Pedro Fonseca cross in the 86th minute to secure the win.
CARDS CLAIM FIRST ACC ATLANTIC TITLE
Louisville captured a share of the ACC Atlantic Division title this fall for the first time since joining league in 2014. The Cardinals had previously finished second on three occasions.
UofL finished 5-3-0 in ACC play this season with wins over Wake Forest, Syracuse, Boston College, North Carolina and NC State.
The ACC had eight teams earn a top 25 ranking during the regular season and 11 of the 12 teams received votes in at least one poll this fall.
CAMARA TURNING IN ONE OF BEST SEASONS ALL-TIME AT UOFL
Aboubacar Camara is in the midst of a special season at Louisville, tallying 13 goals through 16 matches this season. The forward is putting together one of the top seasons by anyone to wear the UofL uniform:
CAMARA, FONSECA FORM TOP-SCORING DUO
Aboubacar Camara and Pedro Fonseca have been one of the top 1-2 punches in the country this season. The Louisville forwards are currently the top scoring pair in the ACC and the country.
The duo has combined for 21 goals and 10 assists this fall with Camara leading the ACC in points and Fonseca ranking second and the two sitting first and fifth in goals, respectively.
LOUISVILLE PUTTING ON IMPRESSIVE OFFENSIVE DISPLAY
After a slow start to the season offensively, the Cardinals have gone on a scoring binge and have proven to be one of the top offenses in the country. Louisville tallied just five goals over the first four matches of the season, going 2-2-0 over that stretch. However, the Cardinals found the net 21 times in their next five matches, securing their first five-match winning streak since September of 2016.
Louisville put nine goals on the board in consecutive wins over Syracuse and Northern Kentucky, and then again in victories over Boston College and Western Illinois, the most in a two-match stretch since scoring 12 in matches against Asbury (10) and Transylvania (2) during the 1987 season.
The Cardinals currently rank seventh in the country at 2.50 goals per match, and were second in the ACC with 18 goals in eight conference matches. UofL also ranks fifth nationally with 40 goals and is first in the ACC and fourth nationally with 7.12 corner kicks per match.
