Cardinals In Second After Day 2 Finals at Purdue Invitational

Cards notch nine wins, including three of the four relays
W. Lafayette, Ind. -- The University of Louisville men's and women's swimming team used nine wins to both stay  in second place after 28 events at the Purdue Invitational Saturday evening at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center. The Cardinal women trail only Northwestern and the men trail host Purdue.

The Louisville foursome of Tristen Ulett (24.91), Kaylee Wheeler (27.01), Gabi Albiero (23.31) and Arina Openysheva (21.74) put up the winning time of 1:36.97 in the 200 Medley relay. The Louisville men touched second when Mitchell Whyte (21.49), Evgenii Somov (23.32), Neal Morsi (21.10) and Michael Eastman (19.25) combined forces to go 1:25.15.

Louisville grabbed the top two spots in the 400 IM when Abby Hay touched first, posting a 4:08.13 just ahead of Maria Sumida's 4:09.72. Cardinal Daniel Sos won the men's event, beating the field by almost two seconds with a time of 3:45.23. Hayden Curley was sixth in the A-Final with a 3:55. 29. Eli Shoyat went 3:57.64 in the B-Final.

The Cards went 1-2 in the 100 fly when Gabi Albiero touched in 51.72 just out-touching teammate Tristen Ulett's 52.07. Abby Hay was fourth in the A-final, boarding a 52.92 and Alena Kraus was sixth overall with a 53.27. Jeffrey Tuning went 49.13 as the top finisher for the Cardinal men.

Arina Openysheva won the 200 freestyle, stopping the clock at 1:45.21 for an NCAA B-cut. Alena Kraus was fifth in the A-final with a 1:48.26. The Cardinal men also won the 200 free, with Colton Paulson taking first in 1:34.84 just ahead of teammate Gustava Saldo's 1:35.30. Santiago Aguilera took fourth with a time of 1:37.11. Michael Eastman was fifth in 1:37.87 to round out the A-final.

Mariia Astashkina was the top Cardinal in the 100 breaststroke A-Final with a fifth place time of 1:00.23 and a B-cut . Adeline Farrington won the B-final with a time of 1:00.29 her B-cut. Kaylee Wheeler went 1:01.32 in the B-final for a B-cut. Evgenii Somov was second with a B-cut time of 52.52 for the men's A-final. Fellow Cardinal Luke Shourds was seventh, turning in a 54.12 for a B-cut.

Paige Hetrick was fifth in the A-final with a time of 54.43. Tatiana Salcutan won the B-final with a 54.87. Mitchell Whyte won the men's A-final with a B-cut time of 46.20. In the B-final, Jack Wever went 48.08 and Neal Morsi posted a 48.10.

In 1M diving, Riley Bullock scored a 278.10 in the B-final. Daniel Pinto finished fourth on the 3M springboard with a score of 393.30 to qualify for NCAA Zones.

The Cards dominated the final 800 free relay, with the women finishing eight seconds ahead of the field. Paige Hetrick (1:48.19), Gabi Albiero (1:46.48), Arina Openysheva (1:44.74) and Tristen Ulett (1:46.84) combined for the winning time of 7:06.25. The men followed suit with the winning time of 6:22.78 put up by Michael Eastman (1:36.97), Colton Paulson (1:34.80), Daniel Sos (1:35.99) and Gustavo Saldo's anchor of 1:35.02.
