The Cardinals took a 4-2 defeat at Virginia Tech on Friday.
The loss is the second straight for Louisville (7-4-0, 3-2-0 ACC), which was playing its second straight top-10 opponent for the first time since the 2018 ACC Tournament.
In a match that featured six goals, none came in the first 45 minutes. The two sides played a high-paced opening half that featured 13 combined shots and four from the Cardinals that required saves.
Macoumba Ba, Aboubacar Camara, Nico Diaz and Sander Roed all put shots on frame in the first half, but the Hokies' keeper kept the ball out of the net.
Making his first career start in goal, freshman Gavin Krenecki came off his line to thwart the best scoring opportunity for the Hokies in the first half.
Virginia Tech (7-1-3, 3-1-1) quickly got on the board in the second half, with Jacob Labowitz heading home a cross just over two minutes after halftime. Labowitz then doubled the advantage 10 minutes later with his second tally.
The Cardinals got one back in the 70th minute, playing a quick corner to Jamie DiLuzio who served one into the box and Bradley Sample headed it into the top right corner for his first goal of the season.
VT had the answer though, getting two goals over the next 11 minutes to put the match away.
Camara added to his team-leading goal total in the closing stages on Friday, collecting his eighth tally of the year to set the final margin.
The Cardinals were outshot 16-13 in the loss, just the second time they've been on the wrong end of the shot column through 11 matches.
Louisville will now return home for four consecutive home matches beginning Tuesday against Eastern Illinois. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium.
