Cardinals Begin Final Homestand Tuesday Against Eastern Illinois
October 11, 2021 | Men's Soccer
Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – After back-to-back road matches, the University of Louisville men's soccer team returns home to take on Eastern Illinois on Tuesday at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET and will be televised on ACC Network Extra.
ABOUT THE CARDINALS
The Cardinals took their second straight loss on Friday with a 4-2 defeat at No. 9 Virginia Tech. The match was scoreless at the half before seeing six goals over the final 45 minutes. Bradley Sample scored his first goal of the season and Aboubacar Camara added his team-leading eighth in the final minutes.
Tuesday marks the start of a four-match homestand that will round out the home portion of the 2021 schedule. The Cardinals are 6-1-0 this season at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium and a win on Tuesday would match the second-most home wins in a season since Lynn Stadium opened in 2014.
SERIES HISTORY
Louisville and Eastern Illinois will meet for the first time on Tuesday. The Cardinals are 5-0-1 all-time against current members of The Summit League (3-0-0 vs. Oral Roberts, 1-0-0 vs. Kansas City, 1-0-0 vs. Western Illinois, 0-0-1 vs. Denver), including a 7-1 victory over Western Illinois two weeks ago.
GOALS, GOALS, AND MORE GOALS FOR CAMARA
Aboubacar Camara scored just one goal in six matches during the fall of 2020. Since the calendar has flipped to 2021 however, the forward has been among the best goal scorers in the country.
Camara leads the Cardinals with eight goals on the season, a total that ranks second in the ACC and 12th nationally. He scored five goals in the first seven matches of the season, the most through seven matches since David Guzman also had five in 2006.
Camara scored in four consecutive matches (Kentucky, Wake Forest, Syracuse, Northern Kentucky), becoming the first UofL player to do so since Tim Kubel in 2014.
LOUISVILLE SPREADING THE GOAL SCORING WEALTH
While the Cardinals have been putting goals on the board in large quantities, the scoring has come from a variety of sources.
Aboubacar Camara and Pedro Fonseca have led the way with eight and six goals, respectively, but 11 different Cardinals have scored a goal this season with six recording multiple goals.
Macoumba Ba, Dante Huckaby, Josh Jones, Brandon McManus, Ayden Nocus and Sander Roed have all tallied their first collegiate goals this season.
LOUISVILLE PUTTING ON IMPRESSIVE OFFENSIVE DISPLAY
After a slow start to the season offensively, the Cardinals have gone on a scoring binge over the last month. Louisville tallied just five goals over the first four matches of the season, going 2-2-0 over that stretch. However, the Cardinals found the net 21 times in their next five matches, securing their first five-match winning streak since September of 2016.
Louisville put nine goals on the board in consecutive wins over Syracuse and Northern Kentucky, and then again in victories over Boston College and Western Illinois, the most in a two-match stretch since scoring 12 in matches against Asbury (10) and Transylvania (2) during the 1987 season.
The Cardinals currently rank second in the ACC and rank seventh nationally at 2.64 goals per match, and lead the ACC with 13 goals through five conference matches. UofL also sits third in the ACC and ninth in the country with 29 goals and is first in the ACC and fourth nationally with 7.45 corner kicks per match.
