Cooper's OT Goal Seals Louisville's Comeback Win at No. 12 Boston College
October 15, 2021 | Field Hockey
NEWTON, Mass. – Erica Cooper's goal with 7:37 left in overtime lifted the fourth-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team to a 3-2 win at No. 12 Boston College. Cooper's goal capped the Cardinals' comeback effort after being down 2-0 in the third quarter. With the win, Louisville improves to 12-2 on the season and 4-0 in ACC play. The Eagles drop to 9-4 (1-3 ACC).
"BC had the best of us in the first half, but we were able to turn it around in the second half," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "We started moving for one another and connecting on more passes. The momentum shifted when we started to defend with some intensity and togetherness. Obviously, this was a great result against an impressive opponent, but we need to address some areas that need attention."
Aimee Plumb tallied a goal and an assist while Charlie van Oirschot and Cooper scored for the Cardinals who fell behind 2-0 early in the third quarter. The game was evenly contested with each team delivering eight shots and earning four penalty corners apiece. Freshman Mila de Kuijer posted four saves and senior Alli Bitting added a defensive save in the contest.
The teams played through a scoreless first quarter before the Eagles broke through with a penalty corner goal from Sarah Johnson midway through the frame.
Boston College took the 1-0 lead into halftime after holding a 5-2 edge in shots and a 4-1 advantage in shots on goal while Louisville owned a 2-1 edge in first half corners.
The Eagles added another goal in the third quarter behind a converted penalty stroke by Sky Caron to extend their lead to 2-0.
Louisville responded less than two minutes later when Julie Kouijzer sent a long pass from the left side of the field into the circle where Plumb was waiting on the left post to tap the ball past Kennedy. The sophomore's third goal of the season pulled her team within a goal midway through the third quarter.
The Cardinals carried the momentum into the fourth quarter when van Oirschot intercepted a Boston College outlet pass and found the back of the cage to deliver her first goal of the season, tying the score at 2-2 in the fourth minute of the frame.
The teams continued to battle throughout the remainder of regulation. BC had a scoring opportunity in the closing minutes of the fourth quarter, drawing a penalty corner with 1:21 left to play, but de Kuijer turned back Fusine Govaert's initial shot to keep the score even at 2-2.
The teams entered a 7v7 sudden-victory overtime which saw Louisville attack early with a pair of corners and two shots before Plumb gained control of the ball off of defender's stick near the Cardinals' attack 25-yardline and made her way to the right side of the circle and directed a shot which glanced off of Kennedy's pads and Cooper, who was stationed on the right post, connected on the rebound for her fourth goal of the season.
Louisville will continue its five-game road stretch with a Sunday matchup at Northeastern.
