No. 4 Louisville Scores Season-High Seven Goals in 7-0 Win at Northeastern
October 17, 2021 | Field Hockey
DEDHAM, Mass. – Sophomores Aimee Plumb and Embry Jane Imorde each scored a pair of goals to lead the fourth-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team to a 7-0 win over Northeastern Sunday afternoon at Dedham Field.
Plumb and Imorde paced the Cardinals' offense while Erica Cooper, Katie Schneider and Alli Bitting also scored as Louisville delivered a season-high seven goals – the most since Sept. 9, 2016 when UofL beat Central Michigan 8-0.
In the game, Louisville outshot Northeastern 16-14 with an 11-7 edge in shots on goals while the Huskies held an 8-5 advantage in penalty corners. Freshman Mila de Kuijer posted seven saves en route to her ACC-leading sixth shutout of the season.
The Cardinals (13-2) jumped on the scoreboard just 23 seconds into the game when Plumb converted on a penalty stroke for her third goal of the season to give Louisville a 1-0 lead.
Cooper added to the lead midway through the second quarter with her fifth goal of the season.
Louisville took the 2-0 lead into halftime despite Northeastern owning a 7-6 edge in shots and a 3-1 advantage in corners. Defensively, de Kuijer posted three first half saves to keep the Huskies at bay while Northeastern's Julia Gluyas turned back a pair of shots.
The Huskies (4-10) attacked early in the third quarter with de Kuijer collecting two more stops, but the Cards notched a pair of goals within a two-minute span to extend their lead.
Plumb tallied her second goal of the game, extending her season total to four. Imorde followed with her first goal of the game, bringing the score to 4-0 midway through the third quarter.
The fourth quarter brought three more Louisville goals. The flurry of scoring began with under five minutes remaining in the frame when Schneider made good on a penalty stroke attempt for her team-best ninth goal of the season. Imorde quickly delivered her third score of the season with an assist by junior Emilia Kaczmarczyk. The Cardinals' offense continued with a penalty corner goal from senior Alli Bitting who connected on her second goal of the season off of a feed from Niebuhr.
"I don't think the score line was indicative of how the game was played," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "Northeastern was able to pierce our defense easily at times and put our deep defense under a lot of pressure. Moving forward, we need to tidy up defensively. On the flip side, we were able to link some good on-ball passages together and we were efficient in our circle play. Two road wins is a lot to be proud of."
The Cardinals will return to action next weekend when they travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. to take on No. 10 North Carolina in an ACC matchup on Friday. The Cardinals will wrap up their six-game road swing on Sunday at James Madison.
