Schmid Leads Cardinals to Fourth at the Southwestern Invitational

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's golf team made a run at a tournament title but finished fourth at the Southwestern Invitational at the North Ranch Country Club on Wednesday.
The Cardinals took the lead heading into the final nine holes by one stroke, but couldn't sustain the advantage to post their best finish of the spring.
San Diego State won the tournament for the third time, while Arizona State's David Puig was the overall individual winner.
Louisville shot a 306 in the final round to finish at 21-over-par, which was three shots behind third place SMU and eight shots in back of Arizona State. Louisville carded a 296-283-306=885 during the three-day event.
Matthias Schmid was in contention for a tournament title, but shot a 77 in the final round to finish in a tie for third place, He finished 10 shots off the lead after shooting 71-68-77=216. He opened the round three shots behind the leader but carded a 5-over-par on the final nine holes.
John Murphy tied for 16th overall after his three-day totals of 75-72-75=222, while Trevor Johnson tied for 22nd after shooting 79-68-78=225.
Devin Morley gave the Cardinals four players in the top 30 by tying for 26th overall after carding 72-76-78=226 and Jiri Zuska tied for 38th after his scores of 78-75-76=229. Â
The Cardinals return to action at the All-American Invitational in Humble, Texas, on Feb. 14-16.
