Schmid Leads Cardinals to Fourth After First Day of the Southwestern Invitational

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Senior Matthias Schmid fired a 71 to pace the University of Louisville men's golf team to fourth place after the first round of the competitive Southwestern Invitational at the North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village, Calif.
Facing extreme windy conditions, the Cardinals battled to just four shots off the lead, trailing Arizona State, which shot a 4-over-par 292 to lead the field on Monday, The Cardinals carded an 8-over-par 296, while second place SMU is at 5-over-par and third-place San Diego State ends the day at 6-over par.
Facing a tournament featuring four top 25 teams, the Cardinals took the lead late in the round, but fell a couple of shots behind the leaders in the final few holes.
UofLÂ pairs with USC, Arizona State, and SMU on Tuesday, with the round beginning at 12:10 EST.
Schmid is tied for fourth and one shot off the lead after his 1-under-par. He recorded six birdies during his round, including three consecutive on holes 6-8. He carded a 1-under on the front nine and was even on the final day of the round.
Devin Morley gave the Cardinals two players in the top 10 with his even-par-72 to close in a tie for sixth just two shots off the lead. He recorded five birdies and an eagle on the eighth hole.

John Murphy is tied for 18th after shooting a 3-over-par 75 and Jiri Zuska is tied for 36th after his 78. Trevor Johnson is tied for 44th after firing a 79.
