Louisville softball is one step closer to taking the field this spring as head coach Holly Aprile has announced the 2021 schedule. Ulmer Stadium is set to host 20 games throughout the season, including a midweek matchup against in-state rival Kentucky and weekend series against Miami (Ohio), Clemson, Virginia Tech, Duke, and Florida State.
Â
Fans will notice that this year's schedule will include some changes compared to previous seasons. The format of this season's schedule accounts for potential cancelled or postponed games, as evident with the Cardinals' open home weekend on March 12-14. In response to the ongoing pandemic, the annual ACC/Big Ten challenge has been cancelled and the ACC has implemented four-game series to limit travel between conference opponents.
Â
Louisville opens the first month of the season on the road, visiting Columbia, S.C to compete in the South Carolina Tournament from February 12-14 before heading north to Raleigh and Durham, N.C on February 18-21. There, Louisville is set to face conference opponents Virginia and NC State. Louisville closes out the month traveling to Gainesville, Fla. to take on Florida from February 26-28.
          Â
The team makes its awaited home debut the first weekend of March, hosting MAC opponent Miami (Ohio) on March 6-7. The home stint continues with three straight series highlighted by Clemson on March 19-21 and Virginia Tech on March 26-28 to finish the month.
Â
April opens with an Easter weekend showdown between Louisville and Pittsburgh before the team alternates between home and away series for its next three opponents. Louisville returns home to face Kentucky April 7, before traveling to Atlanta two days later to face Georgia Tech on April 9-11. Louisville will be back on their home field to face the Blue Devils from April 16-18.
Â
The back end of the schedule could present the toughest challenge for the Cardinals. Louisville will close out its nonconference schedule with a midweek rematch in Lexington on April 21, before returning home to host talented Florida State in a four-game series. The team will then conclude the regular season competing in eight road matches in a span of ten days, starting with a series at Boston College on April 30-May 2 before traveling to Chapel Hill to face North Carolina on May 7-9.
Â
The Cardinals will host the ACC Tournament from May 12-15, where the top 10 conference teams will be eligible to participate this year.
Â
Date, opponents and times are subject to change throughout the season. The Ulmer Stadium attendance policy is still being finalized and will be announced in the upcoming weeks.
