Volleyball Unveils Full 2020 Schedule

The Cardinals will be road warriors with 18 matches away from home.

The University of Louisville volleyball team has released its 2020 home schedule and the Cardinals will play 10 matches at home, nine in L&N Federal Credit Union Arena and one downtown in the KFC Yum! Center. The Cards will play 18 road matches in 2020, beginning the season with three straight road tournaments.

Led by All-American Aiko Jones, the University of Louisville climbed to their highest finish in program history, toppling No. 2 Texas in Austin for a trip to the Elite Eight In 2019.

In 2020, Louisville volleyball returns six starters including Jones, All-NCAA Regional setter Tori Dilfer and All-ACC middle blocker Anna Stevenson and adds a Top 20-ranked recruiting class to the squad. Don't miss a minute of the action in 2020 as the Cardinals host in-state rival Kentucky and eight ACC foes in L&N Federal Credit Union Arena.

UofL will start the season at the Northern Kentucky Invitational where they will meet Missouri, South Dakota and NKU on Sept. 4-6. After falling to Nebraska in the second round, Missouri, with a 22-8 final record, finished its season with 20-plus wins for the 13th time in program history. The Tigers have produced 20-plus wins in five consecutive seasons dating back to 2015, marking the longest-such streak in program history. Northern Kentucky volleyball finished its historic run at the Horizon League Championship won its first tournament crown in program history. The Norse earned an automatic bid into the 2019 NCAA Volleyball Championship where they fell to No. 22 Michigan.

The Xavier Tournament in Cincinnati will feature Purdue, Lipscomb and Xavier. Â The then-ranked No.14 Boilermakers ended their season in the Sweet 16, falling to No.1 Baylor 3-1. Lipscomb features a freshman setter Delaney Dilfer, younger sister of Louisville setter Tori Dilfer in what could be a faceoff between sisters. Xavier finished the season at 11-17 and an 8-10 mark in the Big East.

UofL will begin the home season with a bang as it hosts Kentucky on Sept. 16 in L&N Federal Credit Union Arena. The Wildcats, who were the 2019 SEC Champions, earned a No. 8 seed in the NCAA Tournament before bowing out to the No. 8 Washington Huskies in the regional round of the 2019 NCAA Volleyball Championship ending the season with a 25-7 record.

In a change of format, the Cards will then head to Lexington Sept. 19 for a match with Kentucky in Memorial Coliseum at 7 p.m.

The Cards then set their sights on the ACC campaign, beginning with potent travel partners Miami (Sept. 25) and Florida State (Sept. 27). The Seminoles tied for third with the Cardinals in the ACC race a year ago and Miami boasts the ACC Player of the Year Olga Strantzali and two-time All-ACC Second Team honoree Elizaveta Lukianova.

The first away ACC weekend will start at Clemson on Oct. 2 and wind up at Georgia Tech on Sept. 4.

The next home match after that swing will be Boston College. The Eagles have flourished under second year coach Jason Kennedy, who led the team to its first-ever postseason bid with an invitation to the 2019 National Invitational Volleyball Championship. The Eagles finished the season with 20 overall wins to match its program-best finish: a feat that hadn't been accomplished in the ACC era at Boston College.

Louisville will then host the Syracuse Orange downtown at the KFC Yum! Center in the Prather McCaw Classic to honor Cardinal Forever Lesley Drury Prather, Syracuse volleyball alumna Carrie McCaw, and their daughters who passed away in February. This match which will serve as a fund raiser will not be included in the cost of the 2020 season ticket, however season ticket holders will receive first right of refusal for tickets when they become available. All proceeds will be forwarded directly to the families' scholarship funds.

The Cardinals will head out to Blacksburg, with a match with the Hokies of Virginia Tech on Oct. 16 and then head to Wake Forest for a matchup with the Demon Deacons on Oct. 18.

Virginia is next on the list with the Cavaliers visiting Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. The Cavs are bolstering their roster with a recruiting class of five incomers ranked as one of the top 60 classes in the country.

Cardinal fans should mark their calendar for the showdown with Pitt on Sunday, Oct. 25 at 1 p.m. Like the Cardinals, Pitt is coming off a historic year that saw the Panthers ranked as high as No. 2 after running the ACC table. he 2020 Panthers roster returns two AVCA All-Americans in second-team honoree outside hitter Kayla Lund and honorable mention right side Chinaza Ndee. Lund earned Player of the Year honors for both the ACC and AVCA East Coast Region in 2019.

UofL will embark on a four-match road stretch beginning at Notre Dame on Oct. 28 before heading to Duke (Nov. 1), NC State (Nov. 6) and North Carolina (Nov. 8)

After that challenging stretch, Louisville not have much time to regroup as they return to L&N Federal Credit Union Arena to face Georgia Tech (Nov. 15).  Georgia Tech volleyball (26-8, 14-4 ACC) claimed the NIVC national championship, shutting out South Dakota for its 16th sweep of the 2019 season. Sophomore Mariana Brambilla was tabbed tournament MVP and sophomore Matti McKissock and freshman Julia Bergmann joined her on the all-tournament team.

The Cards will face off with Duke on Nov. 20, the Blue Devils ended the 2019 season 12-19 overall record and were 5-13 in conference play.

The home season will come to a close against one of its oldest rivals as the Cards welcome the Irish of Notre Dame on Nov. 28 in L&N Arena. The two rivals will clash just a day before the NCAA announces the pairings for the 2020 tournament. The Irish, are coming off of a 2019 campaign with its second NCAA Tournament appearance in three seasons. The Irish are set to return four All-ACC honorees in 2020, including First Team selections Charley Niego and Zoe Nunez and Second Team selections Sydney Bent and Caroline Meuth.

- If for any reason the 2020 fall season or any portion of the home schedule is not played, UofL will credit fans' accounts to be used for CAF donations, the 2021 season, or refund any affected payments, this includes payments made for annual seat donations and/or tickets.
- UofL want to reward its fans for your loyalty during this difficult time. For the first time since establishing the priority point system in 2004, fans will receive double the CAF priority points (2 points per $100) for any seat related or philanthropic donations made during the 2020-21 season. CAF priority points are used to determine NCAA Tournament and Bowl game ticket assignment, as well as many other CAF benefits.
