Checking in with Matthew Fung

With the 2020 spring semester recently completed, we will continue our player check-in series with the University of Louisville men's tennis team. Next up is Matthew Fung.
As the Cardinals' season ended, Fung had complied a 13-7 overall record in singles and was 4-4 in dual match play while splitting time at Nos. 3, 5 and 6. The freshman also stood tied for third on the team with a 13 doubles victories. He had an impressive fall debut, posting a runner-up finish in the Purdue Invitational and teaming with Tin Chen to reach the "B" doubles title match of the same tournament.

What do you do in your downtime?
I like to go jogging with my brother, play some basketball, throw the football, or just as simple as watching Netflix.
How are you communicating with teammates, coaches, etc.?
We communicate via phone and emails, but we also video chat as a team.
Are you doing any sorts of workouts from home?
Yes, I was given a workout by our trainer and I do those exercises.
Do you have a favorite "binge" show or series that you are watching?
Yes, I have been watching All American.
What is your favorite quote, saying or motto?
It is what it is.
Do you play an instrument, sing, speak multiple languages or have an unusual skill/hobby?
Nothing special, but I'm pretty good at ping pong.
How do you think your friends would describe you?
A very good person, a gentleman, very respectful, and great to be around.
What is your favorite social media platform?
Snapchat or Instagram.
What words of support or encouragement would you send fellow student-athletes?
I think we should really focus on our education right now.
Who is your favorite athlete and why?
My favorite athlete is Roger Federer. I say this because I like the way he carries himself on and off the tennis court.
What are some of the top moments/favorite memories from your career so far?
I think my favorite moment of my tennis career so far is when we beat #10 ranked Virginia 4-3 at home.
If you could play any sport other than tennis, what would it be?
I have always loved playing basketball and football, but because of my height, I would have to say I would play football.
