Louisville, Ky – In the latest episode of Where Are They Now Podcast, Cardinal Forever Alana Berrocal ('10) joined swimming and diving assistant coach Kameron Chastain to share how her time at UofL helped prepare her for her future and get her to where she is today.
Â
"You are ready to handle a lot more at a much younger age being a college athlete, and being a college athlete at UofL and to have the support system you have, truly nothing compares," Berrocal said of her transition from swimming at Louisville to her time in law school.
Â
Having both Cuban and Puerto Rican heritages, family plays an enormous part of Alana's life. She said, "After meeting Arthur (Albiero) and some of the assistant coaches, I felt like had a family away from which was just invaluable to me," was her number one reason for choosing Louisville. Berrocal said she felt like she connected with everyone and that everyone was trying to connect with her, and it was nice having that support system.
Â
Academically, Alana always knew she wanted to go the business route. Having always been a very creative person, it was important to her to find those kinds of opportunities in the school she was choosing.
Â
"I was really impressed with the school of business on my recruiting trip at UofL. What really impressed me was how well they work with student athletes, because it is super important that they work together," she said.
Â
When started the program, she really enjoyed the marketing courses she was taking, specifically brand management. After her time at Louisville, Berrocal continued her education in law school where she fell in love with a trademarks course because she felt it fell in line with everything she loved doing in her program at UofL.
Â
She said, "I was able to use the degree that I got and the specific teaching that I got at UofL in the business school learning marketing into my legal career and education."
Â
Today, Berrocal is a practicing attorney out of Manhattan, specializing in intellectual property and entertainment law. With business not going as usual because of the health concerns associated with COVID-19, she is finding the bright side in having to work remotely.
Â
"I am able to connect with clients and colleagues on a whole new level. Ironically, I have actually developed closer relationships with some of my clients and the colleagues I have worked with because now I'm getting face time with them, where I wasn't before."
Â
When asked how her time at UofL as a student athlete helps her in her career, Berrocal said she never had an interview for a job where swimming wasn't a major topic and coming from Louisville it means that much more.
Â
Although she lives in New York now, Berrocal can't help but come back to the 'Ville every once in a while. "Louisville is such a fun town, a fun city," she said. "There is so much going on. At the end of the day I love the Big City, but I love coming to Louisville because it's a big city with a small-town feel."
Â
Berrocal's favorite memory at Louisville was the trip to the Big East Championship in Pittsburgh her senior year. "The coaches were lovely enough to rent us two luxury busses for the six hour trip. A horrific blizzard came through when we left and it ended up taking us closer to 15 or 16 hours to get there. So, we stopped for food in the middle of nowhere at this restaurant called Steak Buffet USA and we all cracked up laughing because we had no clue where we were or where was Pittsburgh. We go inside and have dinner and noticed the coaches weren't coming in so we look outside and see the entire coaching staff digging the busses out of the snow and we all just started dying laughing again."
Â
Alana's message to recruits is "UofL will take you through life in a way you can't fathom. The team environment is unmatched and cannot be replicated," she said. "If you choose Louisville, you will absolutely not be sorry."
