Interview with Head Coach Scott Teeter
March 25, 2020 | Women's Lacrosse
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville women's lacrosse head coach Scott Teeter talks about the season coming to an abrupt halt, social distancing and looks ahead to next year.
On his adjustment from what he and his team are normally doing this time of year.
This is usually the most difficult time of the year, the business time of year. And it came to a quick halt when we were at the University of Delaware. It's really above sports. There is a very serious issue going on right now so we had to take the precautions necessary. It's sad for our team that worked so hard to have their season cut short. But, they get it. They are back home at their residences now with their families. It gives me some time to focus and get to some things that I don't usually get to until later on in the year. But, most importantly, it allows us to get some family time.
Â
On the emotions from the team when they found out they weren't going to be able to play.
They were definitely sad. It hit our team and obviously our two seniors (Brenna Shanahan, Allie Arcidiacono), that at the time thought their careers had ended. We're a close team and they rallied around the seniors. But, it hit everyone hard because they had worked so hard. We were seeing some success on the lacrosse field and had a big chunk of our season ahead of us.
Â
On things you can do during the break.
We haven't yet, but we will watch film and break it down. With the technology that we have, we can send that film to our players. We need to use this break to help us get better. We have time to do things that we usually don't have time to get to. Our players are good kids and they want to learn, they want to get better, so they're going to take whatever we give them to help accomplish that.
Â
On this new world with social distancing and everything else involved with it.
It's definitely a new world and I never would have expected anything like this to come. But, it's just handling it. You handle it day-by-day. It was the same thing when the announcements were coming through my administration that the season was canceled. This is something that is above us. It's our job now to stay safe and make sure that we do our part to help our nation get this under control.
Â
Reflect back on your last contest against Niagara and the season as a whole.
Â
I thought we played a solid 60 minutes against Niagara. We didn't necessarily play well for 60 minutes, but we played hard and that was our challenge at times this season. It was an up and down season for us. We have more depth on our team this year which gives us options. We can practice differently and our players are fresher down the stretch. That was a big difference this year. Against Michigan, our start wasn't good, but we battled back and played extremely well for 40 minutes to tie the game at 11 with eight minutes to go, but then didn't take a shot the rest of the way. We learned a lot about ourselves in that game, who wants the ball and who's going to step up and make plays. Against Virginia Tech, it was sort of the same thing. We played extremely well and we had a chance late. We were within one goal with just over a minute to go and didn't really generate a quality scoring opportunity. We learned a lot in those games. We had a young team with 16 freshmen that all played valuable minutes and they will be better for us next year.
Â
Message to lacrosse fans and all sports fans about this situation.
It will be okay. It will all work out in the end. Be smart and spend time with your families. Use this time to get better watching lacrosse players on the internet. And once we get clearance to get back on the lacrosse field, then it will all iron itself out. That is the message right now. Don't think that you're getting shortchanged or you're losing something, because this affects the nation.
Â
On the program moving forward.
I thought we took a pretty giant step forward this season. We have more depth and it's helped with our development. We had a couple of wins against teams that beat us last year in Marquette and Vanderbilt. Being on the winning side of those games shows me progress. I'm obviously disappointed that we didn't get the last half of our season to progress more, but our players are hungry and they'll be ready.
