Cards Fall Short Against Oregon

Louisville, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's tennis team dropped a close match to Oregon 4-3 Friday evening at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
"We had a strong start against Oregon today by winning doubles and had the momentum going," said UofL head coach Rodrigo da Silva. Â "I'm super proud of the guys and the way they fought. We had a chance to win, but it just didn't turn out that way. We were right there and that's all I can ask for from our guys. We fought hard and played well, but they played better than us today."Â
The Cardinals (5-3) started the match by taking the doubles point with wins at the Nos. 2 and 3. Sophomores Fabien Salle and Alex Wesbrooks gave the Cards and early edge with their 6-3 win over Riki Oshima and Jesper Klov-Nilsson at No. 3. On court two, the freshman duo of Daniel Fainblum and Matthew Fung took down Charles Roberts and Brandon Lam 6-3 to clinch the first point of the match.Â
In singles action, Oregon took took the first two matches at Nos. 1 and 5. At the top-seed, Joshua Charlton, No. 29 in the ITA singles rankings, defeated Louisville's No. 66 ranked Tin Chen 6-3, 6-2 at the and Luke Vandescasteele beat Fainblum 7-6, 6-1.
The Cardinals would respond by taking the No. 3 and No. 6 spots to take the 3-2 lead over the Ducks. Salle picked up a 6-3, 7-6 decision against Ty Gentry, followed by a Matthew Fung win over esper Klov-Nilsson by a score of 6-4, 7-5.
The Ducks would even the contest at 3-3 with a hard-fought victory at the No. 2 spot. Sophomore Sergio Hernandez took Emmanuel Coste to a third set, but was defeated by a 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 decision.
The match came down to the No. 4 spot where sophomore David Mizrahi was engaged in a three-set battle with Riki Oshima. The players split sets with Mizrahi winning the first 6-2 and Oshima taking the second 7-6 to force the decisive third set. Oshima prevailed 6-2 in the third to clinch the victory for the Ducks.
The Cards will welcome Boston College and Cleveland State to the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center Sunday for a double header starting at 12 p.m.
