The pair each tallied 285 individual points, while the Black Team captured the team title.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – For the second consecutive year, the University of Louisville baseball program's annual Omaha Challenge wrapped up on Tuesday with a pair of student-athletes sitting at the top.
Freshman Logan Beard and junior Luke Brown racked up 285 points apiece to share the individual crown. It's the second straight individual title for Brown, who captured a share of the title in 2019 as well.
Beard finished inside the top three in the 400-meter run, tire flip and towel hang in his first Omaha Challenge. Brown was the model of consistency throughout, finishing no lower than 12th in any of the nine individual events.
After 11 events, it was the Black Team captained by Jack Perkins that captured the team title by a narrow 12-point margin. Perkins was joined on the Black Team by Beard, Glenn Albanese, Trevor Amburgey, Ben Bianco, Tim Borden II, Cooper Bowman, Henry Davis, Lucas Dunn, Isaac Humphrey, Christian Knapczyk, Riley Phillips, Michael Prosecky, Cameron Robinson, Dalton Rushing, Garrett Schmeltz, Luke Seed, Chris Seng, Anthony Silkwood, Wyatt Stevenson, Gavin Sullivan, Drake Westcott and Ben Wiegman.
The 2020 Omaha Challenge got underway last Wednesday with Michael Prosecky taking home the top spot in the 2,100-yard shuttle run in a time of 8:17.06 and Tyeler Hawkins capturing the towel hang with a 2:50.22 mark. The Red Team then swept its way to a decisive victory in the tug of war.
After squat, vertical jump and long jump testing on Thursday, the Red Team added another victory in the bike race Friday morning. Later that afternoon, Dalton Rushing posted the fastest time in the tire flip, covering the 60 yards in 55.03 seconds.
Freshman Alex Galvan turned in the top mark in the 100-meter swim Monday, finishing the short course in 1:07.69, and Trey Leonard made it three straight years with the top time in the 400 meters, getting around the track in 54.45 seconds.
The 15th-annual Omaha Challenge concluded Tuesday with the individual medley. Levi Usher raced his way to victory in 2:53.62, more than 26 seconds faster than the nearest competitor.
The Omaha Challenge concludes a busy fall semester for Louisville players, who will now look to have a strong finish in the classroom as final exams begin on Dec. 3.
ABOUT THE OMAHA CHALLENGE
Soon after being hired to lead the Cardinals, McDonnell introduced an intense test of physical and mental stamina during his first fall at the University of Louisville with what he refers to as the Omaha Challenge. Two captains are selected and teams are drafted to compete against one another in a series of events testing the athleticism of the teams and the individuals, with a team crown and an individual champion to be named at the conclusion. Sports performance coach Zach Farrel oversees the intense competition, while also motivating his charges to extend themselves to their limits.
