
Cardinals Outlast Wolfpack 3-2 in ACC Opener

Melanie McHenry has 29 kills to lead the Cardinals.
LOUISVILLE, Ky.-- Outside hitter Melanie McHenry had 29 kills and setter Tori Dilfer tied her career-best with 54 assists to lead the University of Louisville volleyball team to a 3-2 victory over North Carolina State in the ACC opener at L&N Federal Credit Union Arena Friday night.
UofL moves to 8-3 and 1-0 in ACC play with 28-30, 25-12, 25-27, 25-19, 15-10 victory. Alexis Hamilton had 23 digs, Aiko Jones added three service aces and 15 kills with Anna Stevenson chipping in seven blocks. UofL hit .254 with 67 digs. North Carolina State hit .150 with 10 blocks and 75 digs. The Wolfpack's Melissa Evans had 20 kills on the night as North Carolina State falls to 5-8 and 0-1 in ACC play.
In the first set, UofL tied up the score 7-7 with defensive plays by Anna Stevenson and Aiko Jones who had back-to-back blocks. The Cardinals had to rally after being down 14-11 to tie the score at 16, forcing NC State to use their first timeout. UofL took the lead 18-17 after an Aiko Jones kill. Both teams traded points, with 17 total ties as NC State went up 21-20 and UofL used its first timeout. Coming out of the break, Melanie McHenry had a kill to spark the Cards. Down 23-22, NCSU used its second timeout but an NC State hitting error put UofL up 24-23 as Tori Dilfer served for set point. The Wolfpack countered before an Anna Stevenson kill put UofL back up 25-24. The teams  traded points before NC State went up 26-25 for set point as UofL used its last timeout. An Aiko Jones kill gave UofL back the lead at 27-26 but UofL errors led to a 28-28 tie. A Cardinal service error and an attack error by McHenry gave NC State the first set 30-28.  Â
UofL took an early lead in the second set going up 7-5 on three kills by Emily Scott. NCSU's Daniella McDonald served for three straight points to put NC State up 8-7. An NC State service error gave UofL a 10-9 lead and then the Cards spread the lead to 13-10. Another Emily Scott kill put the Cards up 14-10 as NC State used their first timeout of the set. A Melanie McHenry kill put UofL up 16-11 and the Wolfpack called timeout. After the break, Scott got her fourth kill to give UofL an 18-11 lead. Back to back service aces by Aiko Jones pushed to a 22-11 lead. The Wolfpack would score just once more as the Cards rolled to a 25-12 win. UofL raised its hitting percentage to.338 in the second set holding NC State to .203.

The score stayed tight in the third set with 14 total ties and four lead changes. Up 13-12, UofL got a block from Tori Dilfer and Emily Scott to put the Cards up 14-12. A solo block by Anna Stevenson forced NC State to take their first timeout as UofL pushed ahead 17-14. Aiko Jones had a block to spread Louisville's lead to 19-15 and NC State used their final timeout. The teams traded points before NC State forced the Cards to use their first timeout as NC State used a 3-0 run to come within one at 19-18. Aiko Jones came out strong after the timeout with her first kill of the third set to push UofL's lead to 20-18. The longest rally of the third set allowed NC State to tie the score at 21-21. A hitting error by NC State pushed UofL ahead 24-23 for one of two set points. NC State's Lauryn Terry kill tied the game at 25 and UofL used its final timeout down 25-26 following another long rally. Up 26-25, Daniela McDonald connected on a set from Nina Sharpton for the 27-25 win.

Emily Scott's two kills in the fourth set and 14th of the night gave UofL a 17-15 lead forcing NC State to use their first timeout of the set. Melanie McHenry's block forced NC State to use their final timeout as the lead for UofL grew to 21-16. UofL used the longest rally of the set to roll ahead 22-17 as Alexis Hamilton served two straight points. An NC State service error allowed UofL the first set point at 24-18. Melanie McHenry's 25th kill of the night gave the Cards the 25-19 win.

Back and forth point exchanges saw a 3-3 tie in the game followed by a Melanie McHenry kill, her 26th of the night and a service ace by Aiko Jones saw UofL double up on NC State to take a 6-3 lead. UofL's lead grew to 12-8. Back to back blocks by NC State allowed them to pull within two at 12-10 as UofL took a timeout. But the Wolfpack could not counter, falling 15-10 in the fifth.
Louisville returns to action this Sunday, September 29 at 1 p.m. to face North Carolina at L&N Credit Union Arena.
