Cards score three goals in the third quarter after trailing 1-0 at halftime
NEWTON, Mass – The sixth-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team scored three goals in the third quarter to beat 17th-ranked host Boston College 3-2 in an ACC contest Friday afternoon.
Â
After trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Cardinals (7-1, 1-1 ACC) tied the score early in the third quarter. They quickly found themselves down again, but delivered a pair of unanswered goals within a two-minute span to pick up their first conference win of the season.
Â
This was a great win on the road for us," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "BC dictated the game in the first half, we didn't press well and lost possession very easily in the first half. We made some halftime adjustments and executed very well on both sides of the ball.  We are still looking to play a solid consistent game throughout, but today you cannot deny our spirit, fight and excellent teamwork to get the win."
Â
Boston College (4-4, 1-1 ACC) gained control of the game early and struck first with a goal from Jamie Natale midway through the first quarter. The Eagles held possession throughout most of the first half and held the 1-0 lead entering halftime after outshooting Louisville 5-1 and holding 1-0 edge in penalty corners. Â
Â
The Cards regrouped during break and attacked early in the third quarter when Bethany Russ drilled a reverse shot into the cage after receiving a pass from sophomore Mackenzie Karl. The senior forward's team-best eighth goal of the season evened the score at 1-1.
Â
Just over a minute later, BC countered with its second goal of the game as Margo Carlin deflected a penalty corner shot from Natale to put the Eagles back on top 2-1.
Â
Louisville immediately answered, earning its first penalty corner of the game. Freshman Margot Lawn gathered a loose ball off of a rebound and lifted it into the cage for her third goal of the season to tie the game at 2-2.
Â
The momentum continued for the Cards who struck again two minutes later when junior Madison Walsh delivered a shot which was stopped BC goalkeeper by Jonna Kennedy, but Walsh was there for the rebound. Her fourth goal of the season gave Louisville the lead for the first time in the 39th minute of the game.
Â
UofL went on to outshoot Boston College 3-1 in the fourth quarter finished the game with a 10-8 edge in shots and a 3-2 advantage in corners.
Â
The Eagle made a final push to score, replacing their goalkeeper in favor of an extra field player with 2:30 left on the clock, but Louisville's defense held strong to preserve the 3-2 win.
Â
Louisville will wrap up its six-game road stretch on Sunday when the Cardinals travel to Providence College for a 1 p.m. matchup.
