Cards Open Fall Season on the Water at IU

Cardinals and Hoosiers to meet for the first time since 2016
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The University of Louisville rowing team begins its season when the Cardinals travel to Big Ten foe Indiana on Saturday, September 21, for a dual event scrimmage with the Hoosiers.
Â
The Cards will face an IU team that finished 12th at the NCAA Championships last year. The teams last met in 2016 for a scrimmage in Bloomington.
Â
"We are returning to IU for a reboot of our fall scrimmage," head coach Derek Copeland says. "We made this trip for several years but haven't pulled it off the last couple of seasons. We will scrimmage in Bloomington on Saturday morning and, although not a great race for spectators, it will show us a lot about where we stand with a perennial top 15 team. We plan to race two or three evenly matched Louisville eights against a similar lineup from the Hoosiers."
Â
The scrimmage will not be a traditional regatta, as there will be three-nine minute pieces and will have a rate cap, which is a limit to the strokes per minute allowed. "This keeps the training where the coaches want it," Copeland adds. "It allows the teams to be next to each other throughout the entire race. This is a valuable thing for our athletes to experience this early in the season."
Â
The scrimmage race in Bloomington opens a busy fall for the Cardinals, who will host the annual Red & Black Regatta on Oct. 5 before traveling to the Head of the Charles Oct. 19 and then the Head of the Hooch on Nov. 2. The fall season will conclude for Louisville at the Rivanna Romp in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Nov. 17.
