The program celebrates its 20th anniversary season
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville rowing head coach Derek Copeland announced the Cardinals 2019-20 schedule on Wednesday (Sept. 18). The Cards will compete in six regattas and four scrimmages across the fall and spring seasons. The program will celebrated its 20th anniversary this season.
Â
"We are excited to release our 2019-20 schedule," Copeland said. "For the fall, we are once again sending a boat to the Head of the Charles. This is a great opportunity for part of the team to represent Louisville in a huge and storied regatta. The addition of the Big Ten Invite in April will be a major test of our speed. We expect that the NCAA selection committee will use that race for a lot of their selections decisions this year."
Â
Louisville begins the season with a scrimmage at Big Ten foe Indiana Sept. 21 in Bloomington.
Â
The Cardinals will host the 13th annual Red & Black Regatta Oct. 5 at the G. Garvin Brown III Rowing Center at Waterfront Park on River Road. The event marks the only home event in Louisville for the Cards during the season. There will be a host of events around the regatta in celebration of the team's 20th anniversary.
Â
The fall season officially opens when Louisville participates in a pair of world renowned regattas. First up for the Cards is the Head of the Charles, in Boston on October 19. UofL then heads to Chattanooga, Tennessee on Nov. 2, for the Head of the Hooch. Both events annually have over 1,000 boats participating in various events throughout the weekend.
Â
The fall season comes to a close on Nov. 17 at the Rivanna Romp, hosted by fellow ACC member Virginia.
Â
The Cardinals begin preparing for the spring championship season by traveling to Orlando, Florida for a train trip Feb. 22, which concludes with a scrimmage against defending American Athletic Conference champion UCF.
Â
The lone event in March will see Louisville host the annual Oak Ridge Cardinal Invite on the 14th and 15th in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
Â
UofL will open April action in Sarasota, Florida for the Sunshine State Invite on April 3. The following weekend, the Cardinals will head back to Oak Ridge for the Big Ten Invitational April 10-11.
Â
The regular season ends when the Cards travel to Michigan for a two-day scrimmage with the Wolverines May 2-3.
Â
The 21st ACC Rowing Championships will be held on May 15-16 in Clemson, S.C., marking the 11th-straight year the Tigers have hosted the regatta. The Cardinals finished sixth at the championship last season, advancing three boats to the Grand Finals.
Â
The season culminates with the NCAA Championship May 29-31, which will also be held at Oak Ridge.
