No. 22 Cardinals Sweep Xavier

UofL wins 25-18, 25-11, 25-16
NASHVILLE, Tenn. --  Aiko Jones had nine kills and four blocks to lead the University of Louisville volleyball team to a 25-18, 25-11, 25-16 sweep of Xavier in the second match of the Lipscomb Tournament Saturday afternoon in Nashville, Tenn.

UofL (6-2) hit .242 with eight blocks and nine aces. Setter Tori Dilfer had three aces and 14 assists. Junior middle blocker Anna Stevenson had seven kills, two aces and three blocks in the winning effort. Xavier drops to 3-4 on the season with the Musketeers hitting .076 and committing seven service errors. XU was led by MaryAnn O'Toole's five kills and 16 digs.

In the first set, Xavier stayed close, trailing by just three points at 12-9 before the Cards busted the lead open to 17-9 with a five point run. Louisville called timeout when XU pulled within four at 20-16 before the Cards closed out with a 25-18 win. Anna Stevenson had five kills and the Cards hit a toasty .417 during that time.

The Cardinals tore out to an 8-0 lead in the second set and seemingly had things under control. Xavier countered with an 8-3 to come within three points at 11-8 and sparked a Louisville timeout. However, the Musketeers would score just three more points as Louisville rolled to the 25-11 win.

Louisville built a seven point lead in the third set to go up 16-9 on two straight Melanie McHenry service aces. The Cards spread the lead to 11 at 23-12 on a kill by Aiko Jones and then finished out with the 25-16 win with an Anna Stevenson kill for point, set and match for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals stay on the road with matches against rivals Kentucky and Cincinnati next weekend. Â
