Monica Negron ranks second all-time in program history with 145 ground balls and 92 caused turnovers, third with 164 draw controls and seventh with 67 games played.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Former University of Louisville women's lacrosse All-American Monica Negron has been selected to play for Puerto Rico in the 2019 Pan-American Lacrosse Association Women's Lacrosse World Qualifiers.
The 2019 PALA Women's Lacrosse World Qualifiers for the 2021 World Lacrosse Championship will be held Nov. 14-17 at Lake Myrtle Sports Park in Auburndale, Fla.
"After I had my career-ending knee injury during the NCAA tournament my senior year, I never thought I would play competitively again," said Negron. "I'd had a pretty good career, but knew if there was ever an opportunity to be healthy again and play for my national team, it would be a dream come true. Growing up, my ultimate goal was always to be able compete at the international level and there is nothing like being able to represent Puerto Rico on that stage."Â
Negron, who played for Louisville from 2011 to 2014, was the 2014 Big East Defensive Player of the Year, twice was named All-Big East and earned IWLCA All-Region honors all four years. As a senior she helped lead the Cardinals to a Big East championship and their first ever NCAA Tournament win.
She ranks second all-time in program history with 145 ground balls and 92 caused turnovers, third with 164 draw controls and seventh with 67 games played.
The PALA World Qualifiers will feature 12 teams from North, Central and South America, highlighted by the United States and Canada.
It marks the first time that Puerto Rico will compete as a senior national team.
"Although I wasn't born there, nor raised in Puerto Rico, my parents always made sure that my brothers and I knew how to speak Spanish, knew where our family came from, while understanding how special our culture truly is," Negron added. "I am beyond excited to have the opportunity to represent the Puerto Rican flag and to be a role model for younger girls like me."
Negron is currently the Assistant Director of Student-Athlete Leadership & Development at the University of Louisville.
