The Cardinals defeated EKU 2-1 and 9-3 in a pair of six-inning scrimmages on Saturday.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville baseball team captured a pair of victories over Eastern Kentucky on Saturday at Jim Patterson Stadium, winning 2-1 and 9-3 in two six-inning scrimmage contests.
Saturday's first scrimmage was dominated by pitching as the Cardinals sent six hurlers to the mound. Freshman Michael Prosecky made the start and tossed a scoreless inning with a strikeout. Freshman Evan Webster, sophomores Garrett Schmeltz and Carter Lohman, and senior Adam Elliott all added scoreless frames as well.
Offensively, the Cardinals tallied the only runs they would need just five batters into the contest. Junior Lucas Dunn and senior Danny Oriente recorded first inning singles and Zach Britton plated two runs with a single back through the middle. Britton was a perfect 2-for-2 on the afternoon, later adding a double to his line.
The second half of the day saw more offensive from the Louisville bats, as the Cardinals pounded out 11 hits. Sophomore Levi Usher went 2-for-3 with four RBIs, three of which scored on a triple with the bases loaded in the fifth. Junior Ben Bianco notched a double as part of a 2-for-3 day and freshman Nick Dean had a pair of hits of his own. Freshman Dalton Rushing had the lone long ball of the day for either side, sending out a solo homer in the final inning.
Pitching was sharp again in the second contest for the Cardinals with senior Luke Smith, freshmen Ryan Hawks and Kellan Tulio, and sophomore Jared Poland working scoreless innings.
Louisville's fall continues with intrasquad scrimmages tentatively scheduled throughout with the dates and times announced on a weekly basis, and will host their annual Pizza Bowl series Oct. 14-20.
Louisville entered the fall coming off its fifth NCAA College World Series appearance in 2019. The Cardinals finished the season 51-18 overall and made their deepest postseason run in program history, reaching the bracket final in Omaha.
