Chaussee leads with 15 kills.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The No. 25-ranked University of Louisville volleyball team spotted visiting Texas AM two sets before scrambling to 19-25, 20-25, 25-22, 25-18, 15-9 win in the Cardinal Classic Saturday evening at the L&N Federal Credit Union Arena.
Â
"It was a great comeback win. We talked about our young team having to grow up as a group and mature and that is what they did. We got contributions from everybody and is what you call a great team win," said Dani Busboom Kelly, UofL head coach.Â
Â
UofL, now 1-1, hit .295 with five aces and five blocks led by outside hitter Claire Chaussee's 15 kills. Texas A&M (1-1) hit .214 and had seven aces and 6.5 blocks. Camille Connor paced the Aggies with 11 kills, an ace and two blocks. UofL got 13 kills from freshman Aiko Jones and 12 from senior Melanie McHenry.
Â
In the first set, Texas A&M led wire-to-wire, at one point building a six point lead at 18-12 on a Hollan Hans service ace. The Cardinals cut the margin to three when setter Tori Dilfer zinged an ace by the Aggie defense to put the Cards down just 21-18. The teams traded points until a kill by Hans sealed the TAMU win 25-19. The Aggies hit .304 for the set with Samantha Sanders adding three kills.
Â
In the second set, the Card fell behind by seven at 14-7 on a kill by London Austin-Roark. The Aggies powered out to a 24-17 lead but the Cardinals staved off match point four times before falling 25-20 on a kill by Sanders.
Â
After the break, the Cards had the lead until an ace by Louisville native Karly Basham gave the Aggies its first lead at 15-14. An ace by Louisville's Akela Yuhl took the lead back at 17-16. Texas A&M countered with two straight blocks sparked a back and forth battle between the two teams. A kill by Austin-Roark took the Aggies within one at 23-22 but consecutive kills by Anna Stevenson and Melanie McHenry avoided the sweep and forced a fourth set.
Â
The Cards popped out to a five point lead in the fourth point on an ace by Alexis Hamilton at 10-5. UofL kept the Aggies at arm's length forcing a timeout on a TAMU ball-handling error at 21-16. UofL arrived at set point on a kill by McHenry at 24-18 before taking the set 25-18 on a hitting error by the Aggies.
Â
The Cardinals return on Sunday, Sept. 1 at 1:00 p.m. to face the Dayton Flyers for the final match of the Cardinal Classic in the L&N Federal Credit Union Arena.
