PETERBOROUGH, Ontario - University of Louisville women's lacrosse incoming freshmen Maddie McDonough and Nicole Perroni are set to represent their countries in the 2019 FIL U19 World Championships, which will take place in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada August 1-10.
McDonough will play for Israel, while Perroni is playing for Canada, who is led by head coach Scott Teeter.
McDonough was a starter for the Norwell lacrosse team in Norwell, Mass., and helped lead the team, along with her sister, to the 2017 Massachusetts State Championship. She was named a South Shore League All-Star at the conclusion of the season. In addition, she was named to the Patriot Ledger All-Scholastic Team.
"Playing for Team Israel is a huge honor for me," said McDonough. "Knowing that I am part of the process of building Israel Lacrosse from the ground up is a really special experience and it's great to see it developing so quickly."
Perroni was a starting defender for the Sinclair Secondary School in Whitby, Ontario. She helped lead Sinclair to a LOSSA Championship in 2015. She has also helped lead the Lady Blue Knights to a Provincial Championship in 2017 and 2018 and the Whitby Warriors to a Box Provincial Championship in 2018.
"Making the team means so much to me because it's been something I've dreamed about since I was first starting lacrosse and watching all of the older players play in their World Cups," said Perroni. "This team is full of amazing people and players. I feel like being with the best players in the country has really helped to push me to work harder and play my best."
The 2019 World Lacrosse Women's U-19 Championships will feature 22 nations from all over the globe, up eight teams from the 14 teams present in 2015 Edinburgh, Scotland.
The 22 teams will be broken up into five pools, with three of the pools having four, and two pools consisting of five nations. Canada will compete in Pool A with the United States, England and Australia, while Israel will play in Pool E with Haudenosaunee, Hong Kong, Belgium and Puerto Rico.
