Matthias Schmid posts school-best postseason round on Monday.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – University of Louisville sophomore Matthias Schmid had to battle more than a difficult golf course this week.
Two days prior to playing in his second career regional, Schmid suffered from a stomach ailment that left him weak and unable to do much before stepping onto the course at the NCAA Louisville Regional on Monday morning at the University of Louisville Golf Club.
Based on his solid performance, it looks like Schmid is feeling just fine.
He overcame his sickness and windy, cold playing conditions to hold the lead after one round of the regional.
The Maxhvette, Germany native fired a 5-under-par 66 to hold a one-shot lead over four other players heading into Tuesday's pivotal round. The 66 was the lowest round by a UofL player in a regional, besting the 67 shot by Robin Sciot-Siegrist in the 2015 Lubbock Regional.
"I made a couple of long putts and holed out twice, which helped me," Schmid said. "Since it's our home course, I played a few times out here and I know how it feels to have a good run out here. The key for me is to continue to hit fairways, hit greens and just make a lot of pars."
Auburn sits atop the leaderboard at 8-under-par, while Oklahoma State, the defending national champions, is in second place at 6-under-par. The Cardinals, who shot a 280, are tied with Baylor for third place at 4-under-par. West Virginia rounds out the top five at 2-over-par.
Starting on No. 10, Matthias Schmid did his best to keep the Cardinals in contention on the first day, birding four of the first nine holes to stand at 3-under-par after the turn.
After the second-year player bogeyed No. 1, he got back on track by recording an eagle on No. 6, and birdies on No. 4 and No. 7 to post his 18th round in the 60s this season.
With temperatures hovering in the low 50s, the Cardinals shot a 1-over-par on the front nine of their home course. However, the next nine holes proved to be a different story, as the Cardinals shot a 5-under-par on the back nine holes to sit just four shots off the lead.
"We wanted to get off to a good start, and we didn't play well over the first nine holes," head coach Mark Crabtree said. "However, our second nine holes were well done. Matthias shot a great round of golf and we need the other guys to play well. The golf course wasn't easy today, but we were able to manage it and got off to a good start."
Junior John Murphy fired a 1-under-par 70 to sit in a tie for 11th. He started slowly by playing the back nine holes at 1-over-par, but responded with a two-under-par on the front nine by birding holes three, four and six.
Junior Devin Morley is tied for 16th after his even-par round of 71. He also shot a 1-over-par on the back nine holes, but improved to a 1-under-par, while Trevor
Johnson is tied for 35th at 2-over-par and Jiri Zuska is tied for 44th after shooting a 3-over-par.
The Cardinals will tee off at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning with Oklahoma State and Auburn to begin the second round at the NCAA Louisville Regional.
