May 14, 2019 | Men's Golf
John Murphy fired a 69 on Tuesday to lead the Cardinals.
SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's golf was in prime contention to advance to the next round of the NCAA Championship, but the Cardinals decided to make their road a lot more difficult heading into Wednesday's final round of the NCAA Louisville Regional at the University of Louisville Golf Club.
After shooting a 4-under-par 280 on Monday to sit in a tie for third place, the Cardinals slipped to fifth place after a 7-over-par 291 on Tuesday.
The Cardinals are one shot behind Iowa State, which sits in fourth place, and six shots ahead of North Florida. Arizona is in seventh at 10-over and West Virginia stands in eighth at 11-over.
Auburn shot a 7-under-par 277 to hold an eight-shot lead over Oklahoma State, which finished the day at 1-under-par.
Baylor, which entered the day tied with the Cardinals for third, remained in third place after firing a 4-over-par on the day.
The top five teams in this regional will advance to the NCAA Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas, which begins on May 23.'
"This was certainly not what we were looking for today," head coach Mark Crabtree said. "We received good performances from John Murphy and Matthias Schmid made a nice putt on No. 18 to help us. We put ourselves in a position on our home course, but we're going to have to play better golf tomorrow."
Overall, sophomore Matthias Schmid continues to pace the Cardinals after his round of 70 on Tuesday. The Germany native is tied for second overall just two shots behind Tripp Kinney of Iowa State, who leads the field at 8-under heading into the final day.
Schmid, who held the lead after his 66 on Monday, battled consistency at times, but helped the Cardinals in a major way with a long birdie putt on No. 18 to give the Cardinals some momentum after a tough round of golf
"I grinded out there today," Schmid said. "I stayed patient out there today. I made some putts, including a big one there on No. 18. I hit a lot of fairways today, which is key for me. I just try to keep it simple and just give myself a chance because putts will drop at some point."
Crabtree was disappointed that his program didn't' take advantage of playing the regional on its home course.
"It's a home course advantage if you take advantage of it," Crabtree said. "If used properly, it is an advantage, but we didn't take advantage of it. We need to make sure we take advantage of playing on our home course on Wednesday."
For the round, the Cardinals were led by junior John Murphy, who put together one of the better rounds of the day by shooting a two-under-par 69 to stand in a tie for seventh place at 3-under-par for the regional.
The Kinsale, Ireland native birdied three holes on the front nine to play the front side at 2-under-par to pace the Cardinals on the afternoon. He recorded birdies on No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5. He maintained his score by shooting par on the back nine.
Junior Devin Morley is tied for 28th after his 3-over-74. He salvaged his day with an eagle on the par 5 17th hole, while Trevor Johnson is tied for 60th and Jiri Zuska is tied for 66th after shooting 78 on Tuesday.
The Cardinals, who will be paired with Iowa State and North Florida, will look to advance to their fourth NCAA Championship when they tee off Wednesday morning at 8 a.m.
