Varsity eight crew finishes second as three crews advance to grand final

SARASOTA, Fla. – Highlighted by a second-place finish by the varsity eight crew, the University of Louisville rowing team opened competition Friday afternoon at the FIRA Sunshine State Invitational at Nathan Benderson Park.

In the qualifying round, the second-seeded Cardinals advanced to the grand final in three of the four flights. The top finish came from the varsity eight boat which placed second overall with a time of 6:31.34, just two seconds off of leading SMU.

Earlier in the day, the varsity four placed fourth in their heat and took the final slot in the grand final, posting a time of 7:35.43. Finally, in a close call, the second varsity four crew earned the last spot in the final with a time of 7:39.62, finishing less than half a second faster than Alabama.

In other action, the second varsity eight finished eighth with a time of 6:52.78, placing them in the petite final.
