Cardinals Prevail 11-7 Over Georgia Tech in Series Opener

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville softball team defeated Georgia Tech 11-7 to complete the series opener Sunday on Don Dobina Field at Ulmer Stadium. The contest was suspended due to rain Friday afternoon with the Cardinals leading 10-5 in the fifth. The win also marked head coach Holly Aprile's 300th career victory.
Louisville (29-15, 9-7) and Georgia Tech (27-21, 8-8) will continue the series with a doubleheader immediately following the conclusion of game one.
In the continuation of game one, Georgia Tech started the fifth inning with runners on second and third. Drew Puckett drew a walk to load the bases. A wild pitch on Rebecca Prairie's strikeout sent Skye Webb home to cut the lead to four runs.
The Cards got the run back in the home half of the fifth when freshman Charley Butler singled and took second on an error. After a groundout sent her to third, she crossed the plate when Melton was caught stealing, bringing the score to 11-6.
The sixth inning brought another Georgia Tech run when Cameron Stanford doubled and scored on Webb's single for the 11-7 final.
Redshirt senior Sidney Melton led the Cards at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two runs while junior Caitlin Ferguson drove in three. Sophomore Danielle Watson (9-11) picked up the win, allowing three earned runs on three hits and striking out seven.
Brooke Barfield (6-3) took the loss after giving up seven earned runs on six hits in 0.2 inning. Webbe finished the game with a 3-for-3, two runs, and a two RBI showing at the plate for the Yellow Jackets.

Prior to the rain delay, the Cardinals built an 8-2 lead in the first inning and added a pair of runs in the third. Tech added a run in the third and two more in the fourth, bringing the score to 10-5 after four complete innings. In the fifth, Skye Webb singled and Bailee Zeitler was hit by a pitch. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch with Drew Puckett at the plate when the game was halted due to rain.

The Cards used eight hits and an error to put up an eight-spot in the home half of the first. Seniors Sidney Melton and Megan Hensley delivered back-to-back hits and freshman Taylor Roby walked to set up Ferguson who smacked a three-run double to left centerfield. RBI singles by Kyra Snyder, Maddy Newman, Celene Funke and Melton brought the score to 8-2.
Georgia Tech added another run in the third behind Drew Puckett's RBI single.
Louisville tallied two more runs in the fourth. Newman reached on an error, stole second and eventually crossed the plate on a wild pitch. Melton singled and scored on Hensley's triple to increase the lead to 10-2.
Cameron Stanford's two-run homer in the fourth cut the lead in half and made the score 10-5.
