Cardinals Fall 4-2 to Virginia Tech
April 12, 2019 | Men's Tennis
Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff earned a 6-4, 6-3 victory over No. 71 Jason Kros at No. 1.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's tennis team fell to Virginia Tech 4-2 in ACC action on Friday evening at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. With the loss, the Cardinals drop to 15-11 and 3-8 in conference play, while the Hokies improve to 16-7 and 6-5 in the ACC.
"We were one game from winning doubles on all three courts and we felt really good about the start of singles," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "We were one game away from winning five of the six first sets, but tennis and boxing to me are very similar. I felt we hit them hard in doubles, then even harder with the first set singles, but they gave us two punches back to tie everything up. Honestly, Virginia Tech had the final blow right there at the end."
Despite the loss, the Cardinals captured the doubles point, gaining the initial advantage as Federico Gomez and George Hedley downed Jason Kros and Brandon Perez 6-2 on court two. Fabien Salle and Sergio Hernandez then clinched the point for the Cards with a 6-4 come-from-behind victory on court three over Carlo Donato and Alex Ribeiro. Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff and Brandon Lancaster were up 6-5 over Henrik Korsgaard and Ryan Kros at No. 1.
The Hokies evened the score at 1-1 in singles as Korsgaard topped Lancaster 6-3, 6-2 at the two-spot. However, the Cardinals countered on court one as Morin-Kougoucheff triumphed over No. 71 Jason Kros 6-4, 6-3 to give Louisville the 2-1 lead.
Virginia Tech knotted the score once again with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 victory by Evan Fragistas over Alex Wesbrooks on court six. Perez then earned a 0-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over Gomez at No. 5 to give the Hokies their first lead at 3-2.
Donato ultimately secured the win for the Hokies, topping Salle 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4. In other singles action, Hernandez captured the first set 6-4 over Ribeiro, but fell 6-3 in the second set and was up 2-1 in the third on court three when play was ended.
The Cards will be back in action at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center on Sunday at 1 p.m. for Senior Day against No. 9 North Carolina.
