Cardinals Fall Short Against No. 9 North Carolina
April 14, 2019 | Men's Tennis
The ninth-ranked Tar Heels won 4-0 over the Cardinals.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's tennis team dropped a 4-0 decision to No. 9 North Carolina on Sunday afternoon at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The Cardinals conclude the regular season with a record of 15-12 and 3-9 in the ACC, while Tar Heels improve to 17-5 and 9-3 in conference play.
"We had some chances with David Mizrahi winning a set and it looked like he was starting to get closer to winning that match," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "It just comes down to close sets. These ACC matches are so competitive that it just comes down to a few sets and the ends of a few sets."
Prior to the start of the match, the Cardinals honored the accomplishments of Clement Filho, Federico Gomez, George Hedley, Brandon Lancaster and Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff with a Senior Day celebration.
"First of all, before these five seniors are tennis players, they're good people," said Ecarma. "Those guys have never got in trouble off the court, they're good students, and good people with good families. They should be proud, the University should be proud of them. They've also done their fair share of winning. Those guys are winners off the court and on the court."
The Tar Heels gained the initial advantage in doubles as Mac Kiger and Simon Soendergaard topped Fabien Salle and Sergio Hernandez 6-2 at No. 3. Just minutes later, North Carolina secured the doubles point as Brian Cernoch and Benjamin Sigouin registered a 6-2 victory over Morin-Kougoucheff and Lancaster on court one. Gomez and Hedley were tied 3-3 with Blaine Boyden and Josh Peck at No. 2 before play was ended.
North Carolina extended its lead to 2-0 in singles as No. 25 Sigouin defeated Morin-Kougoucheff 6-4, 6-2 on court one. Lancaster then fell 6-2, 6-2 to No. 95 Peck at the two-spot, allowing the Tar Heels to gain a 3-0 advantage.
On court five, Federico Gomez dropped a hard-fought 6-2, 7-5 decision to Soendergaard as the Tar Heels clinched the 4-0 victory.
In other singles action, Mizrahi won his first set 7-5 and was up 3-2 over Ladd Harrison on court four. At the three spot, Hernandez fell 7-6 (7-4) in the first set and was down 2-1 in the second to Cernoch. Salle was down 7-6 (7-2), 0-1 to Boyden when the match was stopped.
Up next, the Cardinals will head to Cary, N.C. for the ACC Championships, which begin on Wednesday April 17.
